- Medford Rogues pitcher Brandon Gomez earned the franchise's first complete-game victory since 2019 during Friday's 14-7 win over the West Coast Kings.
Brandon Gomez pulled off a rarity for the Medford Rogues on Friday night, earning a complete-game pitching victory as the Rogues opened their season-ending series against the West Coast Kings by earning a 14-7 win at Harry & David Field.
Gomez became the first Medford pitcher to go the distance and earn a victory since James Turnbull accomplished the feat on July 23, 2019.
Typically in collegiate wood-bat summer baseball, starting pitchers have limited outings that rarely last more than five or six innings, but Gomez proved up to the task Friday as the Rogues improved to 25-20 overall and 10-14 in Pacific Empire League play.
The differences in the outings between Turnbull and Gomez, however, were drastic in the manner in which they accomplished the feat.
After giving up a leadoff single against the Hayesville Hammers in the 2019 regular-season finale, Turnbull went on to retire the next 27 batters. The Phoenix native finished with five strikeouts and no walks to earn a 9-0 victory.
Gomez didn’t enjoy nearly as easy of a time against the West Coast Kings (5-18 PEL), who scored three runs in the opening frame and four more times in the second inning to build a 7-0 lead.
After that, though, it was all goose eggs on the scoreboard by Gomez.
Seven of the 10 hits allowed by Gomez came in the opening two innings, and the 6-foot-6 right-hander from New York finished with three strikeouts and two walks.
The Rogues were able to create a winning opportunity for Gomez by scoring five runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Bradley Navarro and two-run home run by Cody Ferrante.
Medford gained the outright lead an inning later, with Cody Nitowitz, Liam Barrett and Navarro each driving in a run to give the Rogues a 9-7 advantage.
Ferrante finished 2-for-4 with one run and four RBIs and Navarro was 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs to help spark Medford, while Nitowitz went 2-for-4 with one run and three RBIs, Barrett was 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and Langan Naylor had two hits and scored twice.
Six of Medford’s nine batters in the lineup recorded at least one RBI.
