- A helicopter makes a drop on a grass fire near and between panels of a solar farm off Hwy 234 in Eagle Point Wednesday.
Wildland firefighters are throwing numerous ground and aerial resources at a grass fire outside Eagle Point estimated to be about 7 acres, and asking motorists to steer clear of the area to allow for increased fire traffic.
The fire was first reported at 11:43 a.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of Highway 234, close to the Highway 62 intersection, according to Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon dispatch data via PulsePoint, and information released by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District.
As of 12:35 p.m., fire crews and law enforcement were on scene. The fire was burning on a private solar panel farm property, according to a sheriff’s office post.
ODF Southwest Oregon District crews are working with Jackson County Fire District 3 to engage in an aggressive initial attack and contain the fire. They have deployed multiple engines, as well as the district’s medium-duty Type 2 helicopter and versatile Type 3 helicopter.
No evacuation orders have yet been issued.
The fire’s cause is under investigation, ODF said in a Facebook update.
A spokesperson for the solar panel company, Soltage, could not immediately be reached for comment.
