UPDATE: Power restored after outage hits thousands of Pacific Power customers

Demand for electricity in the Northwest is expected to grow at its fastest pace in decades. Demand in Oregon is being driven by an influx of large data centers in the region. 

Power has been restored to thousands of Pacific Power customers in Southern Oregon and Northern California who experienced an outage that began shortly before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

“A large transmission line operated by Pacific Power & Electric outside of Ashland had a problem due to equipment in the Ashland electrical system,” an Everbridge alert issued by Rogue Valley Emergency Management said.

A power outage is affecting more than 14,200 Pacific Power customers between Ashland and south Medford, according to the company’s website.

As of 11:40 a.m. Wednesday, crews have been notified, and the power is expected to be restored in at least some areas by 5:30 p.m., the website said.

Outages in individuals pockets of southern Jackson County were first reported shortly before 11:30 a.m., the website said.

The cause is under investigation, the website said.
