Over Easy Southern Oregon among region’s top brunch spots

- The iced white chocolate raspberry mocha was a delightful mix of creamy and sweet, and we were allowed to bring the drinks from The Other Easy to Over Easy before enjoying our meals.
It’s hard to beat a nice Sunday brunch, and with Over Easy Southern Oregon, it’s hard to beat the fresh fare cooked up by the downtown Medford restaurant.
The eatery’s rotating menu offers sweet and savory dishes prepared by chef Braden Hitt, who owns the establishment with wife Stephanie Hitt.
“We start everything from scratch — every morning we make fresh biscuits, mushroom gravy, roasted corn — everything that we can do ‘same day,’ staying as fresh as possible,” Stephanie Hitt is quoted saying on the eatery’s website.
Over Easy, located at 21 N. Bartlett St., was previously a pop-up brunch spot before moving to the downtown space in 2019.
Hungry and in search of a delectable breakfast pick-me-up, I headed into the brunch spot and was greeted by a convivial, colorful space bursting with decorative plants, wall art and checkered floors, reminiscent of the kind of restaurant that characters in a ’90s sitcom would chow down at.
The restaurant also offers a few outdoor tables for those who want to dine in the sun.
It was around 11 a.m. Sunday, and after asking for a table for two, I was informed there would be a 20-minute wait; less than ideal but fair, considering the eatery’s packed clientele during peak hours and that I didn’t have a reservation.
Joined by a beautiful woman — my girlfriend — we passed the time with iced coffee from Over Easy’s sister café bordering the main restaurant, The Other Easy.
The coffee and cocktail bar had multiple drinks to try out, from classic espresso to The Over Easy Marg, but we settled on two iced white chocolate raspberry mochas.
What a wonderful decision that was.
Served in a mason jar with ice, the beverage was creamy with the perfect amount of sweetness from the white chocolate and a subtle raspberry flavor to balance out the bite of the espresso.
Returning to the main restaurant after a short wait, we were seated and ready to peruse that weekend’s brunch offerings, which included a 3 Egg Omelet, Cornmeal Fried Catfish PoBoy, Orange Zest & Rosemary Buttermilk Pancakes and more.
I had only been to Over Easy once before and was delighted by the peanut butter pancakes. This time I tried out the Southern Breakfast ($19), which came with cheddar and green onion grits, bacon, fried green tomatoes, eggs — ordered over-easy of course — and sourdough toast.
My girlfriend selected the Plain Jane ($19), an offering of heirloom tomatoes, home fries, two eggs, bacon and toast. As someone who can’t eat gluten, she was delighted to find out the eatery offered gluten-free toast options.
Our waitress was kind and attentive and more than willing to answer any of our menu questions.
Despite the packed crowd of hungry guests, our food arrived within 20 minutes of ordering.
The Southern Breakfast was plated in a classic yet modern style, with the bacon, eggs and other items surrounding the grits and the fried green tomatoes drizzled with remoulade on top and extra butter on the side. Proportionally, the dish offered enough to fill up a hungry diner such as myself.
The grits stole the show with their classic mild taste and dense, mealy texture, complemented by the green onions’ crisp and sweet flavor. The over-easy eggs were tastefully seasoned with salt and pepper. They were perfectly cooked, exhibiting a wonderful silky yolk within, perfect for toast to be dipped in.
For the crunchy bacon fans out there, Over Easy is your place. The smoky and salty flavor was incredible, and the texture was firm and thick enough to be held but easily crumbled with the initial bite. After munching through my three bacon slices, I almost wished I had another three pieces. Over Easy’s bacon earns the unofficial title of “best bacon in town” in my book.
Even though I’m not the biggest tomato fan, the fried green tomatoes made me reconsider. They were a lovely combination of crunchy on the outside and warm, soft and juicy on the inside. The tomatoes were slightly sweet, salty, with just a hint of oil, and the fried outside rounded everything out with its delightful crunch.
The sourdough bread didn’t wow me, but it was more than adequate.
For the Plain Jane dish, my girlfriend was blown away by the home fries. Not a big fan of potatoes, she took a gamble on the starchy vegetable and it paid off. Containing a balance of crunch, moisture and just the right amount of spices, each bite was savory with a sweet undertone.
Her eggs and bacon were just as good as my dish, and she was shocked by the incredible taste of the gluten-free bread, stating that it was “some of the best gluten-free bread I’ve ever had.”
Heirloom tomatoes rounded out the Plain Jane, with a mix of oil, salt and pepper on each of the slices making for a delicious, juicy bite each time.
Perhaps one of the most surprising aspects of Over Easy is its prices. Every meal costs between $17 to $19, which is quite the steal for a sit-down brunch in 2024.
Whether it’s a cute date, lunch with relatives or a solo brunch mission, Over Easy earns top marks from me in taste, service and price.
The restaurant is open 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays.
