The Salvation Army’s “Back to School Backpack Giveaway” is happening this week in Medford, and while sign-ups have closed, there still is an opportunity to donate to the cause.

Nearly 500 local children will receive school supplies, and this year marks a record-breaking level of participation, according to a news release.

“The Salvation Army is still gratefully accepting contributions of school supplies to ensure that every child has what they need to succeed,” the release said.

Donations can be dropped off at The Salvation Army in Medford, 922 N. Central Ave., or at Fred Meyer stores in Medford. Additionally, online donations can be made at jacksoncounty.salvationarmy.org.

Major Jonnette Mulch, corps officer of The Salvation Army in Medford, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “Every child deserves the opportunity to start the school year with confidence and the tools they need to succeed. This event is one of the many ways we work to ensure that children in our community can thrive.

“The support we’ve received from the community has been incredible, and it’s heartwarming to see how many people have come together to make this possible,” she said.

Using a store shopping-style model, each family is provided with the specific supply list required by their child’s school, the release said. Volunteer shoppers help students select supplies, and kids also enjoy treats during their shopping experience.

“This is a critical service we’ve provided for many years,” Jonnette said. “It’s about more than just supplies — it’s about giving these children a great start to the school year and showing them that their community cares.”
