FULLERTON, Calif. — Megan Perry had an explosive day as No. 10-ranked Southern Oregon moved to 4-0, winning 3-0 against The Master’s (Calif.) and 3-1 against Hope International (Calif.) on Friday at the Summer HIU Summer Slam.

Perry, a senior right-side hitter, accumulated 23 kills on a .383 attacking average and 11 blocks in the matches. Marin Mackey matched Perry’s kill total and went for 13 in the Raiders’ 25-21, 25-15, 25-23 sweep of TMU that preceded their first big test of the season — a 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 26-24 decision in which SOU scored the last five points of the fourth set to avoid a tiebreaker.

The Raiders trailed only early and briefly in their frames with TMU. Behind Mackey’s 13-kill, 11-dig and three-ace effort, they also got eight kills apiece from Perry and Sadie Byrd. Vitoria Mattos directed a .245 attack with 20 assists, seven digs and three aces. Kayla Neidigh collected 14 digs in the team’s third consecutive straight-set victory to start the season.

TMU’s attacking average was just .105. HIU’s wasn’t much hotter at .121, though it was the highest clip for a Raider opponent yet.

Perry, after matching a career-high with six blocks in the first match, had five more in the second in addition to her 15 kills on 32 swings. Linda Conceicao was in on three blocks for the second match in a row: She teamed up with Perry and then Mackey for joint efforts that capped the Raiders’ match-ending 5-0 run after they’d trailed 24-21 in the fourth.

Neidigh was solid again with 22 more digs, and Mackey notched her second double-double of the day with 10 kills and 13 digs. Mylena Testoni gave the attack some additional punch with 10 kills and three aces, while Conceicao had six kills without an error.

SOU’s defense forced the Royals’ top attackers, Cassidy Koffroth (12 kills) and Addie Mathias (10 kills), to commit 14 combined errors. HIU had 30 as a team.

Dating back to last year, the Raiders have won 14 consecutive regular-season matches. They face their final nonconference opponents on Saturday, meeting Life Pacific (Calif.) at 10 a.m. and Westcliff (Calif.) at 6 p.m.

Women’s Soccer

SOU 1, SIMPSON 0: At Ashland, Frida Vargas and the Southern Oregon women’s soccer team accepted a late gift from Simpson (Calif.) to score a season-opening win at Raider Stadium.

In the 80th minute of a scoreless game, SOU’s Sierra Betzler escaped double coverage to lead Abby McKean with a pass into the box. McKean took contact from a defender and went down mid-stride attempting to retrieve it, and after the whistle blew Vargas stepped up to stick a penalty kick inside the left post.

It stood as the lone breakthrough for the Raiders, who’d been quieted to that point by Red Hawks keeper Kiah Gridley’s six saves. Their series of near-misses was punctuated by a Mia Ammons shot in the second half that struck the crossbar and bounced back into play.

The win was the Raiders’ seventh in a row against Simpson dating back to 2010. The Red Hawks have been shut out in each of those meetings.

SOU keeper Ashlynn Hernandez kept them off the board again with three saves, including a highlight stop in the first half when Litsy Munoz had her one-on-one on a breakaway. Munoz accounted for three of Simpson’s four shots on goal, firing another that defender Miller Bertani blocked a few yards away from the goal with Hernandez cleared out of the way.
