Beyrouty remains on track for SOGC women’s title defense

Quincy Beyrouty moved one step closer to a successful defense of her women’s championship Saturday in the Southern Oregon Golf Championships, but the final path doesn’t get much easier at Rogue Valley Country Club.

Fresh off a resounding win at the City Championships, the top-seeded Beyrouty kept her SOGC winning streak going with a 1 up triumph over Lindsey Crosier in the 95th edition of the match play tournament.

All four of the top seeds remain in contention for the women’s crown, however, after No. 4 seed Staesha Flock won 1 up over 2013 champion Terry Levis and the Nos. 2 and 3 seeds in Keira Cheng and Kamryn Ford, respectively, also advanced.

Cheng was a 5-and-4 winner over Susie Hammitt, while Ford won 1 up over two-time champion Trina Jones.

Beyrouty and Flock will meet up at 12:40 p.m. Sunday in the semifinals, with Cheng and Ford in the other semifinal.

In the men’s championship quarterfinals Saturday, No. 2 seed Jimmy White and sixth-seeded Daniel Engle each prevailed to set up an intriguing semifinal matchup at 1:10 p.m. Sunday.

White, the 2017 men’s champion, curtailed an underdog run by recent North Medford High graduate Andrew Plankenhorn — who was seeded 26th. Engle, a two-time runner-up, was able to fend off 14th-seeded Ethan Miller to keep hopes alive for his first SOGC title.

In a clash of previous junior-senior champions, Tommy Smith remained in contention for a third consecutive title in the division with a 1 up win over Johnny Mansfield. Smith will face another former champion in Todd Couch in Sunday’s 1 p.m. semifinals, with Travis Brink and Scott Wise also advancing to the semis.

Larry Garvin was able to avenge a loss in last year’s legends final with a 1 up win over Karl Olson during Saturday’s semifinals. Garvin will face Gregory Miller in Monday’s championship after Miller won 4 and 3 over Jay Clancey on Saturday.

Sunday’s senior men’s championship semifinals feature matchups between Rick Dollarhide and Patrick O’Bannon and Mike Stieler and John Ellsworth. The super senior men’s championship semifinals will pit Glen Clark against Steven Wood and Marty Morlan against Jay Miller.
