Clark clips Klabunde in marquee match at 95th SOGC

Super senior division finalist Glen Clark watches his ball during a tee shot Monday at Rogue Valley Country Club.

Glen Clark has experienced his fair share of setbacks during match play golf against Kevin Klabunde — at this point, who hasn’t? — but he got one back Friday to highlight Day 2 play in the 95th annual Southern Oregon Golf Championships.

In a rematch of last year’s super senior men’s championship final, Clark was able to oust Klabunde (1 up) in the quarterfinals this time around at Rogue Valley Country Club.

Clark had won two straight super senior titles prior to Klabunde’s return to that division in 2023, putting him at five SOGC titles earned overall.

Friday’s outcome ensured that Klabunde, who had won three straight men’s senior titles before last year’s super senior crown, remains one championship shy of equaling the tournament’s all-time record for titles set by George Mack (15).

Klabunde entered the tournament having won a title in each of the past six years and eight of the last nine, with 2017 being the outlier.

Clark came into the match as the No. 9 seed compared to the No. 1 billing for Klabunde, but all of that goes out the window when you consider the steady stream of success the Medford golfers have enjoyed throughout the years in the SOGC.

Clark will next face fourth-seeded Steven Wood, who won 1 up over Jim Hoffman, in Sunday’s semifinal round. The other semifinal will pit No. 2 seed Marty Morlan and 14th-seeded Jay Miller, who is coming off a triumph in the Rogue Valley Stroke Play Championships that included Morlan, Klabunde and Clark.

One day after being the talk of the tournament following an upset of two-time reigning champion Ethan DeVore in the men’s championship flight, Braden Shipley saw his run come to an end with a 2-and-1 setback to Edward Smith in the second round. Shipley was seeded 32nd — the last qualifier for the SOGC’s top bracket — while Smith was No. 16.

Smith will face eighth-seeded Riley Kirk in Saturday’s quarterfinals, with the other pairing in the upper bracket involving a pair of players seeded 20th and 21st, respectively, in Mark Wilson and Mason Labow. Wilson won 1 up over No. 4 seed Logan Artner and Labow won in similar fashion against fifth-seeded Zach Blenkinsopp.

Former champion Jimmy White is the top seeded player remaining in the men’s championship flight at No. 2, while two-time runner-up Daniel Engle extended his stay on the 19th hole to fend off a good challenge from Dylan Knight, who lost in a playoff for the RVSPC men’s championship last weekend to Tommy Smith.

Andrew Plankenhorn continued his assault on the upper seeds with a 1 up win over 10th-seeded Jimmy Kelley. At No. 26, Plankenhorn is the highest remaining seed and the Southern Oregon University freshman will square off against White on Saturday.

Tommy Smith maintained hopes for a third straight junior-senior title with a 1 up win over Justin Wise but will face a familiar foe in Johnny Mansfield, who won the junior-senior title in 2019, in Saturday’s quarterfinals. The opposite pairing includes 2020 junior-senior champion Todd Couch and No. 4 seed Richard Owens.

Also advancing were the Nos. 2-3 seeds in Travis Brink and Trevor Telford (2023 runner-up) as well as sixth-seeded Scott Wise and No. 10 seed Scott Plankenhorn — creating a unique in-home battle to see whether father or son can advance the furthest in this year’s SOGC.

Reigning men’s senior champion Rick Dollarhide advanced to Sunday’s semifinals with Patrick O’Bannon — setting up a rematch of last year’s final — along with Mike Stieler (2021 junior-senior champion) and John Ellsworth.

Play in the legends championship flight also began Friday, with reigning champion Karl Olson advancing to face Larry Garvin on Sunday in a rematch of last year’s final. Gregory Miller, who won the legends division in the City Championships, will face Jay Clancey in the other semifinal.

After taking a day off, the women’s championship flight will resume with quarterfinals Saturday.
