- Emergency crews gather near a grass fire along Interstate 5 at Exit 11 on Wednesday.
One lane of southbound Interstate 5 has reopened at Exit 11 in Ashland after air and ground crews corralled an estimated 13-acre grass fire Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
Forward progression of the fire — which started around 2 p.m. — was declared stopped at 3:05 p.m., according to the Oregon Department of Forestry Southwest Oregon District.
“Firefighters have the blaze 90% wetlined with water and are keeping it in check with helicopter water bucket drops,” an ODF Facebook post said. “Forward progression of the fire has been stopped. Due to the progress, retardant loads have been canceled. Resources will continue to work on lining the fire and bolstering lines.”
The I-5 southbound lane reopened around 3:30 p.m, according to the Oregon Department of Transportation. All southbound traffic at I-5 Exit 11 had been halted shortly before 2:30 p.m.
Two helicopters were activated for an aerial attack on the fire, along with ground units.
EOSC dispatch traffic at 2:47 p.m. indicated multiple resources were engaging the fire and there was minimal internal spotting.
A Type 1 helicopter was canceled for the blaze at 3:02 p.m.
The fire sparked in the vicinity of Windemar Drive and Clayton Road in south Ashland. The cause remains under investigation, according to ODF. Zone JAC 542 was issued a GO NOW evacuation order in the early stages of the fire. That moved to BE SET after fire crews had managed the blaze. Zone JAC 541 was under a BET SET evacuation order.
There were reports at 3:22 p.m. of power outages in the vicinity of the fire from de-energized power lines.
