Phoenix Flower Festival: The city of Phoenix will celebrate the vibrance, growth and resilience of the town and its community since the 2020 Almeda Fire with an all-day event, the Phoenix Flower Festival, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, throughout downtown Phoenix. The event will feature live music and dancing, kids activities, local art, craft and food vendors, and more. Also look for the “Flowers of Remembrance: An Almeda Fire Display” along the highway. Sanctuary One Tours: Sanctuary One, a nonprofit animal rescue care farm, will offer tours at 10:30 a.m. every Friday and Saturday through Oct. 26, at 13195 Upper Applegate Road, Jacksonville. A staff member or volunteer will guide you around the farm, explain how a care farm works and answer questions. The tour also includes a chance to meet the sanctuary’s herd of rescued farm animals and house pets. Tours last 90 minutes and involve walking about 3/4 mile. Search & Rescue Learn and Play: Jackson County Search and Rescue wants every person, especially children, to know how to survive alone in the wilderness should they ever become lost. The Lost But Found program was created specifically for this need and is being brought to a library branch near you at select times September through November. This presentation, designed for children but adults are also welcome, consists of a 12-minute video, demonstrations of easy survival techniques and simple gear, and a discussion/questions period led by a member of the Jackson County Search and Rescue team. Afterward, children will have a chance to practice their searching skills around the branch in a scavenger hunt for a survival safety item as a prize for each one. Wednesday, Sept. 11‘Windows in Time’ History Lecture: As part of the free “Windows in Time” library lecture series, Kim Thurman, member of the Rogue Valley Genealogical Society and Association of Professional Genealogists, will present “Shady Cove: A Centennial of Life on the Upper Rogue” at noon Wednesday, Sept. 11, the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Shady Cove, located on the Rogue River, has been a recreational hub for tourists and Jackson County residents since its incorporation in 1972. But how did it acquire its name? Originally known as Etna by 19th-century settlers, the current moniker may have originated nearly a hundred years ago. Thurman will give a talk exploring the area’s settlers, unravel the mystery of how “The Cove” got its name, and other points about the rich history of the community. Southern Oregon BrewFest: The 2024 Southern Oregon BrewFest will take place at The Expo, 1 Peninger Road, Central Point, Friday and Saturday, Sept. 13-14. The BrewFest is really several events rolled into one action-packed weekend of food, beverages and entertainment. BrewFest features more than 70 taps dispensing a wide selection of microbrews, ciders and regional wines from across the Pacific Northwest, the State of Jefferson and even some specially invited guests from the rest of the country’s favorite breweries. Breweries include Cascade Lakes, Cascadia Cider, Crux Fermentation Project, Deschutes, Gilgamesh Brewing, Hop Valley, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Mad River Brewing, Worthy Brewing and many more. The Elton John Experience will perform on Saturday, bringing the electrifying music and unforgettable style of Elton John to Jackson County. Haunted History Tour: Docents will lead an hour-long “Haunted History” walking tour the second Friday of each month through Sept. 13, in downtown Jacksonville. Guests will be introduced to some of the town’s historic buildings along with the restless ghosts and spirits who still occupy them. The courthouse tour features stories of brothels, epidemics and hangings. The Britt Hill tour shares tales of arson, saloons and Oregon’s first Chinatown. The walking tours are not your “typical” ghost tours with special effects but are history tours about real hauntings resulting from past events. Low-cost Pet Vaccines: Make an appointment for your pet to get vaccinated and microchipped the third Saturday of each month. This drive-thru, appointment-only clinic is open to dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Vaccines available for dogs are rabies and the vaccine for distemper, distemper, adenovirus type 2, parainfluenza, and the parvovirus. The FVRCP vaccine available for cats is for panleukopenia (feline distemper), rhinotracheitis, and calicivirus. Reservations must be made by Friday before the scheduled clinic.
