ASHLAND — Southern Oregon’s defense didn’t allow a score in the program’s 400th all-time win, a 46-7 season-opening decision against Lincoln (Calif.) on Saturday afternoon at Raider Stadium.
SOU limited Lincoln (0-3) to 132 total yards, six fewer than the Oaklanders gave back on their 16 penalties. Senior linebacker Ty Glumbik turned in a team-high eight tackles and forced a first-half fumble that Josue Santos recovered, and Jordan Faifai returned an interception 44 yards for a touchdown that made the score 30-0 by halftime.
The Raiders netted 195 of their 311 yards and scored four of their touchdowns on the ground against the independent traveling team from California, which is in its fourth season as a program. The Oaklanders dropped to 3-29 in their team history.
Sophomore Gunner Yates punched in the first two, finishing with 74 yards on 12 carries, and senior Isaiah Hidalgo had the next two to reach 87 yards on 19 attempts.
Senior quarterback Blake Asciutto completed 10-of-18 attempts for 116 yards, finding Rayden Kaneshiro for a 14-yard TD pass midway through the third quarter. Ted Wickman was his top target, making six catches for 50 yards, and receiver Brandon Barthel marked his SOU debut with 42 yards on a pair of receptions.
The Oaks didn’t get on the board until the 11:19 mark of the fourth quarter, when an unforced SOU fumble near the goal line bounced into the end zone and Derek Martin jumped on it. Their quarterback, Jack Clavel, needed 20 attempts to accumulate 80 yards, and their three running backs mustered just 86 yards combined.
The Raiders only punted twice and scored on seven of their first nine drives. The point total was their highest in an opener since 2014.
NOTES:
— Prior to Saturday, the last time the Raider defense didn’t allow a score was in the team’s most recent shutout: Sept. 22, 2018 at Carroll.
— Sophomore defensive end Adonis Jackson finished with six tackles, including a sack and another for a loss. He has recorded six sacks in his last seven regular-season games dating back to last season.
— Brian Batres made a 38-yard field goal and converted all five of his extra-point attempts. He is now 10-of-12 on field-goal tries over two seasons with the Raiders and remains perfect from 40 yards and in.
— The win was SOU’s first of the season-opening variety since 2018.
— This season marks the 90th of SOU football. The Raiders recorded their 100th win in 1962, their 200th in 1984 and their 300th in 2006. They’re now among 24 active NAIA teams that have reached the 400-win mark.
— Next week’s opponent, Simpson (Calif.), is 0-1 in its inaugural season entering Saturday’s late game at Pacific Lutheran. The SOU-Simpson kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Redding.
