- The Poker Chip Ride and Chili Cook-Off will raise funds for Community Works, a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting victims of sex trafficking, domestic violence and sexual abuse.
From bowls of chili to a silent auction and live music, the third annual Poker Chip Ride and Chili Cook-Off, hosted and organized by Crater Lake Eagle Riders Fraternal Order of Eagles 2093, is set to bring bikers and locals together for a good cause — to raise funds for local nonprofit Community Works.
The event is scheduled 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Crater Lake Eagles Lodge, 2000 Table Rock Road in Medford.
Registration for the poker chip ride is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Registration is $20 and open to the public.
For those interested in participating in the chili cook-off with their own rendition of the spicy dish, call 541-880-8267.
“The event’s open to the public; you can come in as a non-member and have a drink at the bar, and you can bid on the silent auction or raffle,” said Scott Moore, vice president of the local Eagle Riders group.
The primary intent of the event is to raise money for Community Works, a resource center dedicated to supporting victims of sex trafficking, domestic violence and sexual abuse.
“The way this all started out, the Medford Eagle Lodge riders got together and came up with a charity event to do … one of members has a friend who works for Community Works, and that’s how we tied up with them,” Moore said.
“Being able to help with the solution and be a part of the solution is my major driving point, and I know that holds true with other Eagle Riders as well, to garner more public support year by year,” Moore said.
The Poker Chip Ride and Chili Cook-Off has steadily grown over the years from 25 riders to 46 last year, and organizers are anticipating even more participants this year.
“A lot of people are very motivated to come this year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see 60-plus riders this year,” Moore said. “And we’ve got maybe 15 (chili entries).”
The way the poker chip ride — also known as a poker run — works is participants riding motorcycles must visit five to seven checkpoints within a set amount of time and pick up a poker chip at each stop. The person with the highest value in chips at the end wins.
First place wins $500, second place $300, and third place gets $100, Moore said.
For the chili cook-off, entrants will submit their best chili dish, and people can try out the different recipes and select their favorite one, with the dish earning the most votes winning the event. Chili tasting is $10 per person.
The Eagle Riders will be raising funds through a silent auction and raffle as well, and live music at the Crater Lake Eagles Lodge will be played by The Gypsy Gillis Band.
The auction will have numerous items to bid on, including power pools, gift cards and more.
“We’ve got stuff ranging from minor sports collectible things all the way to Ashland packages for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and a dinner, The Camelot Theatre, rafting trips with overnight stays and dinners and wine tasting in Cave Junction,” Moore said.
The Eagle Riders have already raised approximately $8,000 in sponsorships for the event.
The group recently received another sponsorship from Abby’s Legendary Pizza. From 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 3, 20% of all proceeds during that time will be donated to Community Works if patrons mention the Eagle Riders fundraiser.
“If this gains enough traction this year, we’re probably going to do a car show next year,” Moore said.
