Jackson County Search and Rescue crews have spent a combined 1,200-plus hours since Friday in the search for a missing Fortuna, California, woman and began a search for a second woman — a senior citizen from Talent — on Monday.

Carolyn “Carrie” Carter-Griffin, 46, was first reported missing in Lane County. She was last seen Sept. 9 in Oakridge prior to video footage, from a camera on Mt. Ashland, showing her walking away from her red Toyota Tacoma pickup truck — Oregon license plates 657 KWD — around 8 a.m. Sept. 11.

The truck was found by a U.S. Forest Service officer more than two days later, just after 8 p.m. Sept. 13, and reported to local law enforcement.

With a missing persons report already filed in Lane County, Jackson County Search and Rescue Cmdr. Sgt. Shawn Richards said search and rescue crews immediately began looking for Carter-Griffin, described as 5 feet, 11 inches tall and 245 pounds.

A retired Forest Service employee who could be experiencing a mental health crisis, Carter-Griffin had recently been in the Eugene area and was traveling back to Fortuna, where she lives with family. Prior to her truck being discovered on Mt. Ashland, her phone “pinged” inside Medford.

Richards said it was concerning that the search for Carter-Griffin was entering its fourth day on Monday and that she had not been heard from for several days.

“We know she was up there on the 11th. … She was seen on a camera that takes still shots every few minutes, and she’s on the still shot walking away from her vehicle the morning of the 11th and headed kind of into the ski area.”

Richards said local law enforcement are looking into reports that Carter-Griffin was seen during a weekly community meal provided in Lithia Park. He said he had confirmed with family members that Carter-Griffin had not been traveling with her dog, which had been a concern on social media.

Sheriff’s office officials said additional help is not needed in the search on Mt. Ashland but that residents are asked to keep an eye out for Carter-Griffin. Posters are being hung up around Medford and Ashland. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 541-774-6800 and reference case No. 24-14907.

A second missing person was reported around noon Monday.

Talent resident Mary Nougier, 78, was last known to be going for a drive in her new-to-her 2006 silver Toyota Camry with California license plates. Nougier, who is described as 5 feet, 2 inches tall, traveled along Highway 140. Her phone was last pinged near milepost 16.5.

Nougier is considered high risk and in need of essential medications. Anyone with information on Nougier’s whereabouts is asked to call the Talent Police Department at 541-535-1253 and reference case No. 24-2020.

Richards said Monday afternoon that he was assigning search crews to a handful of areas where Nougier could have been headed. Residents are asked to keep an eye out in areas of White City, Butte Falls, Eagle Point and along Highway 140.
