The Jackson County Illegal Marijuana Enforcement Team on Friday seized about 1.1 tons of what are believed to be unlicensed marijuana products off Highway 140 near Eagle Point. The driver, a Georgia resident, had paperwork indicating the cargo was hemp, but it tested at THC levels far higher than the 0.3% THC limit for licensed hemp allowed under Oregon law.

The Jackson County Illegal Marijuana Enforcement Team says they are actively investigating leads after finding more than 2,200 pounds of suspected illicit marijuana in a van during a Friday evening traffic stop near Eagle Point.

The 1.1 tons of marijuana products seized off Highway 140 near the Salt Creek Road intersection were believed to be destined for Georgia, according to Jackson County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Aaron Lewis.

The driver — who has not been identified because he has not yet been charged with a crime — was from Georgia, and the white Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van had Georgia license plates.

During the traffic stop, an IMET narcotics K-9 flagged the vehicle. Inside, the vehicle contained 43 boxes of “processed marijuana in different forms,” Lewis said.

Lewis said the driver had paperwork that indicated the cargo was hemp, but tests of the suspected unlicensed cannabis products had THC levels of 17% — far higher than the 0.3% THC limit for licensed hemp allowed under Oregon law.

IMET is a task force focused on black-market marijuana that includes personnel from the sheriff’s office, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Investigations, Oregon State Police and Medford police, a news release said.

The Jackson County District Attorney’s office is reviewing the facts of the case and applicable criminal charges, Lewis said. He declined to go into specifics because the investigation is still “open and ongoing” and detectives are looking into additional leads, he said.
