Steve Wood of Brookings caught a rare behemoth in the Chetco River estuary on Sept. 13.

The 53-pound Chinook salmon took about 15 minutes to reel in and was caught using an anchovy and 360 flasher.

Photos of Wood and the fish have gone viral on Facebook with thousands of views and hundreds of comments. One commenter asked if he could print a photo of the fish and put it in his hotel.

The Oregon record for a Chinook salmon was 83 pounds, caught in the Umpqua River in 1910, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. ODFW says Chinook in the range of 10 to 25 pounds are most common.

Wood, who said he caught a 50-pounder in 1980, plans to give his latest catch a second life by taking it to a taxidermist and mounting it in his house.

Wood’s wife, Shana, said in a text that the fish was a beautiful color, not dark at all with really pretty red flesh. The Woods plan to put some of the meat in the smoker and the rest in the freezer.
