Food run: South Medford Chick-fil-A location opens Thursday

The new Chick-fil-A restaurant is ready for opening Thursday in south Medford at the corner of Highway 99 and Garfield Street.

Medford’s second Chick-fil-A location will open Thursday, bringing 110 new jobs to the Rogue Valley and ensuring that fans of the chain’s chicken sandwiches and waffle fries can find a drive-thru off either Interstate 5 exit in the city.

The new location at 8 Garfield St. in south Medford near the South Pacific Highway intersection will be open for dine-in, drive-thru, carryout, delivery and “Mobile Thru” online ordering, according to a release issued by the Atlanta-based chain.

Regular hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, the same as its north Medford location at 10 Rossanley Dr. in the Northgate Marketplace off I-5.

The new location has a footprint of 4,947 square feet plus a 993-square-foot outdoor dining area, according to an earlier news report referencing the construction proposal submitted to Medford’s Site Plan & Architectural Review Commission at the end of 2022.

The new Medford store will be owned and operated by Chris Peyton, owner of the Rossanley Drive location since it opened in late January 2020. Peyton was born in Keizer and became an owner-operator after retiring as a pilot in the U.S. Navy.

The chain has a unique franchise model that typically limits its owner-operators to a single business, according to the release. Owner-operators are expected to work side-by-side with the restaurant’s employees, and according to the chain’s website, Chick-fil-A does not offer multi-unit franchise agreements to franchise applicants. From time-to-time, however, the website states that “high performing franchise operators may be offered an additional business opportunity.”

The privately held, family owned chain has grown to become the third-largest quick service restaurant in the United States by systemwide sales, according to QSR Magazine’s latest QSR 50 report. The company’s $21.58 billion in systemwide sales slots behind No. 2 Starbucks at $28.7 billion and ahead of No. 4 Taco Bell ($15 billion) and No. 5 Wendy’s ($12.28 billion).

McDonald’s, king of fast-food, was No. 1 with $53.1 billion in U.S. systemwide sales.

Another notable mention on the QSR 50 list was Dutch Bros, which made No. 33 with $1.4 billion in U.S. systemwide sales — just behind No. 32 Carl’s Jr. at $1.5 billion but ahead of No. 35 In-N-Out Burger at $1.24 billion.
