Medford man who preyed on foster kids dies in prison hospice

- James Eldon Mobley, 88, died Monday in the Oregon State Penitentiary infirmary while serving a prison sentence for sexually abusing two foster children. A third case accusing him of first-degree sodomy involving another child victim was pending at the time of his death.
A man serving a 13-year sentence for sexually abusing two foster children — and who faced a pending sodomy charge alleging the abuse of another child — has died in custody.

James Eldon Mobley, 88, died Monday on hospice at the Oregon State Penitentiary infirmary, according to a release issued by the Oregon Department of Corrections.
In September 2014, Mobley was sentenced to a combined 13 years in prison — two 75-month prison sentences served consecutively — for sexual abuses involving two foster children in his care, according to Jackson County Circuit Court records and news reports at the time.
A civil suit was later filed in U.S. District Court in Medford against the state regarding Mobley’s abuses. The state ultimately settled the case for $300,000 in 2017, according to an Oregonian/OregonLive news report at the time.

Mobley was indicted by a Jackson County grand jury on Jan. 6, 2022, on a new charge of first-degree sodomy accusing him of abusing another victim who was under the age of 12 when the alleged abuses occurred between October and November 2013. Records show that there were multiple hearings in the case this year regarding Mobley’s fitness to proceed in the case.
