- Crater receiver Jaxson Godley, shown in action last week, supplied five catches for 47 yards in Friday's 34-0 loss at Churchill.
Crater senior running back Valentin Rodriguez unofficially carried 46 times for 216 yards but the Comets were held out of the end zone by Churchill and suffered a second straight Midwestern League loss in a 34-0 setback Friday night in Eugene.
Crater (3-2, 2-2 MWL), which was looking to rebound from a tough 34-8 loss to Roseburg a week ago, outgained Churchill in total offense but bogged down whenever the Comets got near the red zone.
Crater suffered its first shutout loss since a 35-0 defeat against Henley on Sept. 9, 2022. Friday’s margin of defeat was the largest for the Comets against Churchill since a 58-20 loss in 2018.
Ceville Pasi carried 20 times for 131 yards and two touchdowns and Lucas Gansen passed for two TDs to lead the Lancers (3-1, 3-0), who also got a 39-yard interception return for a score by Aidan Pangelinan to help build a 22-0 lead in the second quarter.
Ben Higginson recorded 67 of his 72 passing yards in the second half for Crater, with Jaxson Godley making five catches for 47 yards.
The Comets will face a bye week before returning at home Oct. 10 against MWL-leading Thurston (5-0, 4-0).

GRANTS PASS 55, SOUTH SALEM 54: At Grants Pass, one play after a pivotal fourth-down conversion on a quarterback sneak by Jordan Rossetta, Grants Pass got a 13-yard touchdown pass from Rossetta to Isaac Johnson with 44 seconds remaining and Parker Roberts’ ensuing extra-point kick broke a tie at Mel Ingram Field.
South Salem had previously scored in the fourth quarter of what was a back-and-forth South/Central Football Conference affair, but a holding penalty negated an extra-point kick by Nathan Segura-Coley and an ensuing 30-yard attempt sailed wide right to create an opening for the Cavemen (3-1 SCFC). Segura-Coley had previously connected on six PAT efforts.
Rossetta completed 15 of 28 passes for 197 yards with five TDs and two interceptions, and Treyton Powers rushed 25 times for 137 yards and one score.
Tim Hart helped turn the tide for GP in the fourth quarter after the Cavemen turned the ball over on downs at the South Salem 8-yard line by stepping in front of a pass on the next play from scrimmage for a 5-yard interception return that created a 48-41 edge.
