Howard Shafer was born October 10,1943 in Medford, Oregon, to parents H. Price Shafer and Agnes Dunford Shafer. He attended Washington Grade School, McLaughlin JH, and graduated from Medford HS in 1961. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Southern Oregon College, a Master’s degree in chemistry from Oregon State University and was ABD (all but dissertation) for his Doctorate at University of New Mexico. On completing his coursework at the University of New Mexico, Howard went to work for Chemex Labs Limited in Vancouver British Columbia. He was with the company his entire career, moving to Reno, Nevada when Chemex opened a lab there and staying on when Chemex transitioned to ALS Chemex.
Howard enjoyed listening to music, watching Dodger baseball, and, while in Canada, curling. He loved books, birds, and his cats (the Silver Spur gang), but most of all he loved his family.
Howard is survived by siblings Priscilla Gibbens, Patricia Scruggs (Larry), Stephen (Georgene), John (Lisa), Frank, Daniel (Patti), and Brian; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, and great great-nieces and -nephews; aunt Juanita Shafer; cousins Douglas Shafer, Leta Reti, Randy Shafer, Mark Shafer, Susan Shafer-Shores, David Bernard, and Jerry Nye. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law John Gibbens and cousins Ray Shafer, Roma Wridge and Cleve Shafer.
A quiet, kind and gentle man, Howard will be missed.
