LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Thanks from St. Vincent de Paul, candidate climate forum

Thank you to St. Vincent de Paul supporters

The Medford office of St. Vincent de Paul volunteers and clients wish to thank the many foundations and donors who support our programs.

Most recently AllCare Health, the Walker Fund of Oregon Community Foundation and Arthur R. Dubs Foundation have provided generous funding to our rental assistance program. These foundations have been supporters of our programs for many years, and because of their assistance many deserving families in Jackson County are able to pay rent and avoid homelessness.

We are an all-volunteer organization and all grant funds go directly and only to assisting our clients. We welcome new volunteers in all areas of our work. For information on volunteering, call 541-772-3828.

Candidate forum set on climate change issues

Contrary to what a minority of Americans believe, climate change is real, the Earth is heating up and we humans are the major cause. While solutions at the national and international level can have the most impact in combating climate change, officials at all levels of government can play significant parts as role models and change agents.

That is why Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN) is presenting “Candidate Forum 2024” from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Medford library, 205 S. Central Ave. We want you to know where the candidates stand on important questions about climate and environmental issues.

All of the candidates for Congressional District 2, Oregon Senate District 2, state House Districts 4, 5, and 6, and Jackson County Commissioner, Position 2, were invited to participate. Unfortunately, none of the Republican candidates for these positions has chosen to participate.

The candidates who will be attending are: CD2 Dan Ruby; state Senate District 2 Tracy Thompson; state House District 4 Richard Chasm; HD5 Rep. Pam Marsh; HD6 Lilia Caballero; and JC Commissioner candidate Denise Krause.

The event will begin with formal questions (one question submitted by SOCAN and the rest from the audience and from the public by email prior to the event). To submit a question on the Climate and Environment topic, please send it in an email to SOCAN co-facilitator Alan Journet at alan@socan.eco. After the formal Q&A, there will be an informal meet and greet with the candidates.
