PREP VB: Crater puts wealth of options on display to deny Eagle Point

Eager to get back on the volleyball court and dive into the second half of the Midwestern League season, Crater showed off its depth once again Tuesday night in a straight-sets win over Eagle Point.
Five players registered at least four kills during the 25-13, 25-18, 25-21 victory in Central Point, with Danica Huntoon paving the way with 13 kills to go with three aces for the No. 8-ranked Comets (8-4, 6-1 MWL).
Fellow senior Alexa Gugliotta chimed in with 11 kills, three aces and two blocks, while freshman Addison Benson had nine kills, senior Delaney Henke had five kills and five digs and junior Courtney Cox contributed four kills and two blocks in lieu of injured senior Lanie Snow in the middle.
Crater stormed to an opening-set win and then fended off Eagle Point’s bid to hang around in the final two sets to bounce back from last week’s conference loss to Churchill.
Callie Aplin led the defensive efforts for the Comets with 16 digs to go with three assists, while Kendall Stidham chipped in with 28 assists, 10 digs, three aces and one kill. Tatum Richmond had six digs and one ace and Kaci Wilson doled out six assists.
For Eagle Point (2-12, 0-7), Karris Johnson and Thianna Deng-Gomez each provided six kills, with Deng Gomez also creating two blocks.
Madisyn Dean had 10 digs and Blakely Schauffler added eight digs for the Eagles — who were playing on the road for the second night in a row — while Emary Haning dished out 13 assists, Evy Leonardo had seven assists and Taylor Sheedy served for four aces.
SOUTH MEDFORD 3, WILLAMETTE 0: At Eugene, Mayen Akpan led the charge for South Medford with 12 kills and five aces and Julia Mitchell added six kills in a 25-11, 25-5, 25-5 Southwest Conference sweep.
Julia Slaughter collected 15 assists with seven aces and four kills and Hadassah Pannell added four kills and two aces for the sixth-ranked Panthers (11-6, 7-0 SWC).
NORTH MEDFORD 3, ROSEBURG 2: Paije Carpenter and Nana Silafau each posted 12 kills to help put North Medford over the top in a five-set Southwest Conference win, 25-12, 18-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-6.
Carpenter also collected six kills with one block and Silafau had five blocks for the No. 7-ranked Black Tornado (14-5, 6-2 SWC), while Kristina Atonio had a strong overall match with 18 assists, eight kills, seven digs and one block.
ASHLAND 3, THURSTON 1: At Ashland, sophomore middle blocker Stella Thompson led Ashland with 12 kills and four blocks and Aliyah Sullivan added seven kills and eight digs in a 25-20, 25-16, 14-25, 25-23 home triumph in Midwestern League play.
Kiera Kubiak had 27 assists and Savannah Elster added 19 digs for Ashland (5-6, 4-3 MWL), while Tia Mora tallied 10 digs and Irene Vaz contributed nine digs and two aces.
CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ROGUE RIVER 0: Julia Brehm created nine kills and six of the 26 aces by Cascade Christian in a Southern Oregon Conference sweep at home, 25-8, 25-5, 25-8.
Poppy Freeman finished with eight kills and three aces and Isabel McCauley had four kills and seven aces for the Challengers (9-5, 6-0 SOC), who also got five aces from Ella Stofflett.
Reece Anderson finished with 12 assists and Rylan Hunter had 11 assists against Rogue River (1-16, 0-6).
ST. MARY’S 3, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 1: At Brookings, Ada Bernard had 14 kills and 14 digs and Lexi Smith served for four of 20 aces by St. Mary’s in the Southern Oregon Conference win, 25-21, 25-18, 21-25, 25-15.
Sydney Holdermann supplied eight kills, 15 digs and three aces on 14-for-14 serving for the Crusaders (10-6, 5-1 SOC), while freshman Audrey van Haaren added five stuff blocks and Smith also had 15 digs to go with her 19-for-19 serving.
Ella Yeamans provided 17 assists and Allie Loyd had 10 assists for St. Mary’s.
