Sophomore running back Gunner Yates became the third player in team history and first in 21 years to rush for 20 touchdowns in a season, tacking on three more while netting 148 yards on 18 carries. Junior corner Aukai Grace starred on the other side of the ball with his second and third interceptions of the fall.
The No. 10-ranked Raiders took their record to 6-1 overall and 3-1 halfway through the Frontier schedule. They’re among three one-loss teams in the standings behind 4-0 Carroll (Mont.), which beginning next week faces all four of the Frontier’s nationally-ranked teams consecutively.
SOU took a two-touchdown lead eight minutes into the game on a pair of big scoring plays — a 38-yard rush from Yates and a 66-yard pass from Blake Asciutto to Brandon Barthel. By halftime, another Yates TD and Brian Batres’ 22-yard field goal had the Raiders up 24-0.

Asciutto finished 15-of-25 for 273 yards and, for the sixth consecutive game, did not throw an interception. He helped All-Frontier receiver Sawyer Cleveland to his second triple-digit outing of the season, a 103-yard performance on six receptions. Glen Leith-Ross added two second-half touchdowns for SOU, rushing in from one and nine yards out, and Batres recorded a second field goal from 42 yards deep.
In addition to Grace, Dyllon Daniels collected an interception. Ty Glumbik and Cameron Carr forced fumbles that Da’mon Carter and Mystic Sampaga recovered, and Glumbik led the team with seven tackles.
ACU fell to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the Frontier. Three Firestorm quarterbacks completed just nine of their 23 pass attempts for 116 yards, and their rushers netted only 113 yards on 31 attempts.
The Firestorm became the third team this season that SOU has held to seven points.
SOU is back at Raider Stadium to work on a perfect home record next Saturday against Montana State-Northern. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Volleyball
SOU 3, WALLA WALLA 1: At Ashland, Megan Perry paced three Raiders in double figures with 13 kills in addition to a match-high five blocks, helping No. 5-ranked Southern Oregon to its 20th victory in a 25-14, 25-17, 23-25, 25-14 decision against Walla Walla (Wash.) on Saturday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
The Raiders (20-2, 14-2 Cascade Conference) posted a .320 attack, their highest average in five matches, to overcome a 25-kill display by Wolves outside hitter Sahara Browning, the most prolific attacker in the circuit.
Perry did her damage on 25 swings, and Hannah Stadstad needed only 18 to get her 11 kills. Marin Mackey contributed her 12th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 19 digs.
Browning accounted for half of the team kill total for the Wolves (7-11, 6-10) and dropped in eight during the third set to avoid a sweep. The Raiders never trailed in the fourth, though, and cruised after jumping out to an 11-5 lead.
Setters Annie Hite and Vitoria Mattos directed SOU’s attack with 22 and 21 assists, respectively. Mylena Testoni helped with seven kills and 13 digs, Kayla Neidigh picked up 18 digs, and Sadie Byrd accumulated six kills and four blocks.
The Raiders got to 20 wins for the fifth time in six seasons and as fast as in any season in team history. They also took a half-match lead in first place over Eastern Oregon.
Men’s Soccer
SOU 1, PROVIDENCE 0: At Ashland, freshman Ariel De Dios Cruz finished off a pretty sequence in the 49th minute that made Southern Oregon 8-1-1 in the Cascade Conference and kept the Raiders in a tie with Carroll (Mont.) for first place.
It started with Bryan Mendoza’s through-ball from midfield that Alex Hjulmand chased down at the end line, passing across his body to De Dios Cruz for a short bicycle kick that went as his third goal of the season. Both Mendoza — a defender back from injury for the first time since mid-August — and Hjulmand were credited with assists for SOU (11-3-1).
Women’s Soccer
SOU 1, PROVIDENCE 0: At Ashland, Payton Puppe-Wotipka’s successful free kick in the 69th minute and Ashlynn Hernandez’s clutch play in goal propelled Southern Oregon at Raider Stadium.
With a line of Argos in front of her, Puppe-Wotipka took a 19-yard attempt aligned with the right post that nicked the shoulder of one of those defenders. Its subsequent rerouting left keeper Chloe Pajaro with no chance as she watched it fly inside the far post.
Hernandez, meanwhile, came up with eight saves for her 26th career shutout. She needs one more for SOU’s all-time record.
The Raiders upped their record to 7-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the Cascade Conference.
Cross Country
LINFIELD INVITATIONAL: At Salem, led by freshman Fiona Fraser, the No. 9-ranked Southern Oregon women’s cross country team had three of the top-13 in a 180-person race Saturday.
The Raider women finished fourth out of 19 total teams and were the best out of five Cascade Conference outfits in attendance. The Raider men, who put Mason Weisgerber in 18th place and Jalen Griego in 23rd among a 260-person field, were eighth out of 23 in the team standings.
SOU’s first three women’s finishers each recorded new 6,000-meter PRs: Fraser (21:31.4) in ninth place, Alyssa Johnson (21:47.0) in 12th and Cammeo Ramirez (21:49.8) in 13th. The team’s fourth and fifth scorers were 77th-place Mercedes Harms (24:20.2) and 78th-place Ashley Jentzsch (24:21.8).
On the men’s side, Weisberger hit the 8K finish line in 25:08.5, a season best, and Griego turned in a PR time of 25:13.3. SOU’s next three scorers — Mason Moler (26:17.7), Hayden Roth (26:42.5) and Roman Hernandez (26:49.0) — also established new bests.
