- Readers Who Write
Once more, I’d like to draw your thoughts to the experiences of life.
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), British writer of poems and plays wrote: “To live is the rarest thing in the world, but most people exist, that’s all.” But there is more to that. In fear and even in greed, in joy and in sadness, there is a human tendency to hold on. When we face loss or change, it’s often too much to endure.
We often think that death is the supreme reality, or at least the one great certainty. It is one of the most difficult experiences of life. But life goes on and we can find new opportunities for love and happiness if we move with it. Many claim that “this is the end, my life is over.”
Others however, keep on keeping on and they find growth and betterment as a result of each experience. Those that are faced with a challenge may refuse to be panic-stricken. Life has not ended for those people, it simply goes on. They may say, “I accept the reality of this situation, but not its permanence.” The experience is there to be met.
Do not let outer happenings squeeze you into a box. Open your mind to wisdom, love and good judgment by which you can deal masterfully with it.
When I now look back to my early years of life, I recall experiences of the third grade or the sixth grade. And I remember the teachers and many of the experiences during the World War II years with its dangers and the abusive German soldiers. They were all real and many experiences were not pleasant but were important to me at that time.
But now, all I can say about it is that “they came to pass.”
Every experience in life comes to pass because life is change. This is true not only of unhappy experiences, tragedies and difficulties, but of the happy times too. It is true of all worthwhile achievements.
It’s certainly interesting to know about what has come to pass. History is an exciting study. But history simply records, it doesn’t glorify. The “good old days” are not the golden days of our youth or the heyday of success. Many may claim that the good things in life are fleeting and we can only appreciate them in retrospect. However, if we get the thought of the flow of life right, we come to realize that it means that it’s working toward achievements and that we gain through life’s satisfactions.
The only way to find a continuing sense of peace and fulfillment to be adventurous, to face every day in the knowledge that “this is a new day and I will accept its blessings and challenges.”
Every day of your life comes to pass. Each day is a continuing experience of growth. Understand, we have to let go of the old and face the unfolding “now” of tomorrow, knowing that “this too shall pass.” You may also conclude that life is only a little gleam of time between eternities.
You then may pause at the close of the day and look back to view all you have done — accept what you see as the facts of your experiences, but they are not final. You are not “done” yet. You still have within you a dynamic potential of growth.
