Friday morning shootings leave one dead in Central Point; suspect in custody

One person is dead and another is hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after Friday morning shootings in Central Point involving two residences near the intersection of Bush Street and 4th Street, police said.

A suspect is in custody, but police said they are not releasing any identifications at this time.
Central Point police, in a news release issued just after 11 a.m., confirmed that officers responded to reports of a gunshot victim at a residence in the 300 block of South 4th Street around 7:26 a.m.
Officers arrived and located a deceased 42-year-old male inside the residence, according to the release.

At approximately 7:31 a.m., officers were advised of a second shooting in the 500 block of Bush Street, four blocks away from the location of the first incident. Additional officers from multiple agencies responded to the scene, where a female gunshot victim was located inside a vehicle parked along the street, police said.
Jackson County Fire District 4 and Mercy Flights tended to the female victim, who was later transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, the release said.
According to police, there is a known relationship between the suspect and the deceased male victim. There is not a known relationship between the suspect and the female victim, the release said.
“At approximately 08:04 a.m., Officers from the Medford Police Department, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office and the Oregon State Police located the lone male suspect on foot in the 1000 block of North 5th Street in Central Point, where he was taken into custody,” Central Point police said in the release.
There is not believed to be any further threat to the public, Central Point police said.
At least three Central Point schools were placed on a soft lockdown, as a precaution, around 7:30 a.m. The lockdown was lifted shortly after 8 a.m.
School District 6 Superintendent Walt Davenport issued a statement at 8:35 a.m. reporting a “law enforcement incident” had occurred at a residence adjacent to Central Point Elementary and that a person of interest had been taken into custody by police.
“According to police, there was no current threat to the safety of our students,” the statement read.
“There will be an increased police presence in our community as they continue to investigate the situation.”
The statement reported that security measures had been initiated for Central Point Elementary, Scenic Middle School and Jewett Elementary.
A statement from the district around noon Friday said Central Point Elementary dismissal procedures will be changed today, and parents can expect notification of the changes before dismissal times.
Police said an investigation is ongoing, and police activity will continue in Central Point throughout the day and evening.
