Oregon Ducks land No. 1 seed in College Football Playoff, get first-round bye

The Oregon Ducks are the No. 1 seed and one of four teams to earn a first-round bye as the College Football Playoff announced its 12-team national championship field Sunday.

The Ducks (13-0) are headed to the Rose Bowl for a quarterfinal game against the winner of a first-rounder between No. 8 Ohio State (10-2) and No. 9 Tennessee (10-2). Kickoff for the Rose Bowl is 2 p.m. Jan. 1.
Also earning top four seeds and a first-round bye are No. 2 Georgia (11-2), No. 3 Boise State (12-1) and No. 4 Arizona State (11-2). All, including Big Ten winner Oregon, are conference champions.
Seeds No. 5 through 12 play first round games, at school stadium sites. They are No. 5 Texas (11-2), No. 6 Penn State (11-2), No. 7 Notre Dame (11-1), No. 8 Ohio State (10-2), No. 9 Tennessee (10-2), No. 10 Indiana (11-1), SMU (11-2) and No. 12 Clemson (10-3) All but ACC champion Clemson earned CFP at-large berths.

First round games are Dec. 20-21. The quarterfinals, played in four traditional bowls, are Dec. 31-Jan. 1. Quarterfinal winners play in the semifinals at Orange and Cotton bowls Jan. 9 and 10. The championship game, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, is Jan. 20.
Oregon is slightly favored over Georgia to win this year’s CFP according to sports wagering sites. The Ducks are looking for the school’s first national title in football, after narrowly missing in 2010 and 2014.
This is Oregon’s ninth appearance in the Rose Bowl. The last came in 2020, when the Ducks edged Wisconsin 28-27. In the 2015 Rose Bowl, Oregon blasted Florida State 59-20 in a CFP semifinal.
