Threat of Providence nurses strike lingers as ‘cooling-off’ period ends

Some 380 registered nurses at Providence Medford Medical Center working without a contract since March could join roughly 4,600 Providence healthcare workers prepared to give notice at any moment of another unprecedented Oregon strike.

The Medford nurses are still negotiating with hospital officials, according to a release issued Friday morning by the Oregon Nurses Association. And with the conclusion of a five-day “cooling-off” period on Thursday, the union states its members “are free to send the 10-day notice to strike at any time in what would be the largest healthcare strike in Oregon history and the first doctors strike in Oregon history.”

No strike notice was sent as of Friday, according to the ONA, but its release and the union’s social media posts indicate that the two sides remain at an impasse. On Thursday, the union posted an image of a calendar and the “cooling off” period ending, and stating that Providence executives over Christmas had not “received any visits from spirits like Ebenezer Scrooge did.”

When reached for comment, Providence provided a short statement: “We continue to be in touch with the federal mediator.”
