From the editor’s desk: A new year; mourning a loss; Times stories you might have missed

Published 3:15 am Saturday, December 28, 2024

We’d like to wish all of our readers and advertisers a safe and Happy New Year.

The Rogue Valley Times planned to look back at 2024 and capture the bigger events in a story published online Saturday. It will appear in the Wednesday, Jan. 1, print edition, which will be mailed to subscribers and available for single copy sales Tuesday, Dec. 31.

We look forward to a new year of serving readers and working with local advertisers. As a reminder, the Times’ two-year anniversary arrives Feb. 6, 2025.

Mourning a loss

The Times published a story online late Friday on the death of outdoors writer and Times fishing columnist Mark Freeman, who had a nearly four-decade career in the region at the Coos Bay World and, in particular, the Mail Tribune since 1989 before joining the Times as a contributor shortly after our launch in February 2023.

We deeply mourn his passing, and we will always remember his wit and humor, his dedication to the job and the impact he had on untold numbers of faithful readers. For those of us who knew Mark personally, it is an unimaginable loss.

You can read the story at rv-times.com, and it will appear in the Wednesday, Jan. 1, print edition.
