GIRLS HOOPS: South Medford, Crater wrap up Classic with clutch efforts

South Medford held steady down the stretch despite a challenge from Bishop O’Dowd of California to close out the POA Holiday Classic in Portland with a 63-58 girls basketball triumph in the Platinum bracket Monday.
Junior post Mayen Akpan scored eight of her 15 points in the fourth quarter to help the Panthers wrap up a strong second half that saw them outscore the Dragons by seven points over the final 16 minutes.
Akpan also pulled in 12 rebounds to go with two steals, while senior guard Sara Schmerbach contributed 14 points, six assists, six rebounds and four steals in a valuable all-around effort for second-ranked South Medford (8-2).
Senior guard Maddy Warberg returned from illness to knock down four 3-pointers for 12 points to boost the Panthers, while Jordan Barlow contributed 10 points, six assists and two steals and fellow junior Dyllyn Howell scored nine points.
Jayla Stokes went 6-for-13 from beyond the arc to lead Oakland-based Bishop O’Dowd (6-5) with 31 points and six rebounds.

KAMEHAMEHA KAPALAMA 37, NORTH MEDFORD 29: At Martinez, Calif., North Medford senior Caileigh Raines supplied 12 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks, five steals and two assists to help lead an injury-depleted effort at the West Coast Jamboree.
Riley Smalley added seven points and six rebounds and Kaylin Verduzco added four steals for the Black Tornado, which was minus injured senior starters Olivia Boger and Mariah Lane.

CRATER 53, BEAVERTON 51: At Portland, Crater senior Addi Dippel scored five of her 10 points in the fourth quarter and Lydia Traore had four points in the frame to help Crater rally past Beaverton in the Sapphire bracket at the POA Holiday Classic.
Crater outscored the 6A Beavers 14-8 in the fourth quarter, with Alexa Gugliotta also scoring all three of her points in that stretch and Taylor Young tacking on the remaining basket.
Young led the top-ranked 5A Comets (10-1) with 14 points and Traore finished with 13 points, while Sage Winslow contributed 11 points.
Ruby Foord led Beaverton (5-6) with 18 points.

EAGLE POINT 61, ROSEBURG 53: At Eagle Point, Kady Lindstrom came through with 19 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists to lead Eagle Point to the nonconference victory.
Thianna Deng-Gomez had 13 points and Kady Ledbetter collected 12 points for the Eagles (6-3), while Jill Garlitz added nine points and Emary Haning pulled in seven rebounds.
Leighton Osborn led Roseburg (3-6) with 17 points.
