‘Windows in Time’ History Lecture: As part of the free “Windows in Time” library lecture series, Jacksonville historian Larry Smith will present at noon Wednesday, Jan. 8, the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Smith will share the riveting story of Robbie Collins’ efforts to preserve Jacksonville’s historic buildings by founding the Jacksonville Boosters Club and spearheading the establishment of Jacksonville’s National Historic Landmark District. Robbie’s preservation work is still reverberating throughout the Jacksonville of today, 60 years later. Robbie lived a life that circled the globe, but was firmly rooted in Jacksonville. William Stafford Celebration: Friends of the Hannon Library will host their 30th annual William Stafford Celebration at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at Southern Oregon University’s Hannon Library, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland, in Room 305 (Meese Room). Poet and Stafford scholar Vince Wixon will be this year’s special guest speaker. Featured poets will be Margaret Loken, Peter Yeager, Bill Gholson and Dianne Oberhansly, along with host Amy Miller. The poets will read aloud a William Stafford poem and then read one of their own poems that was inspired by Stafford. In-person audience members will also be invited to read a favorite Stafford poem. Stafford, who died in 1993, served as Oregon Poet Laureate from 1975 to 1990. His collection “Traveling Through the Dark” won the 1963 National Book Award for poetry. In 1970, he was named Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, an honor that is now known as the US Poet Laureate. Scout Troops’ Christmas Tree Recycling: Ashland Scout Troops 112, 8112 and the Ashland Lions Club’s Christmas Tree Recycling is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 11. It is recommended that trees are left curbside the night of Friday, Jan. 10. The recycled trees are chipped and used throughout parks in Ashland.
