GIRLS HOOPS: No. 1-ranked Crater cruises past North Medford in romp

- Crater senior Alexa Gugliotta goes up for a shot ahead of the defense of North Medford senior Kaylin Verduzco during Friday's game in Central Point.
With a focus on making adjustments and fine-tuning as Crater prepares for the upcoming Midwestern League season, the Comets got an added twist Friday night against North Medford when senior leader Sage Winslow fell ill and was unable to play in their first girls basketball clash of 2025.
Crater, which is ranked No. 1 in the Class 5A coaches poll, just chalked that up as another adjustment to face and went about its business with another dominant display in Central Point.
Junior guard Taylor Young took the opening tip from Lydia Traore and scored inside the first three seconds of the game and the tone was set for a 58-28 triumph over the visiting Black Tornado.
Young wound up scoring eight of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter and Addi Dippel knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to help Crater (11-1) build an 18-10 lead through the opening quarter.
The Comets eventually led 31-20 at halftime, then ratcheted things up a notch in the third quarter to erase any doubt with a 19-0 run out of the locker room.
North Medford had received a boost with the return of Caileigh Raines to the lineup after dealing with the after effects of a concussion — senior starter Mariah Lane remains sidelined with the same issue — but the Comets were able to fire at the Tornado in too many ways.
Raines dropped in two 3-pointers and scored her team’s initial eight points during her first quarter back on the court. The senior standout led North Medford with 13 points, while Olivia Boger went 4-for-8 from the free-throw line to help account for her six points.
Traore scored six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter, and earlier in the day announced she has committed to play next season at Westminster University in Salt Lake City.
Dippel finished with seven points for the Comets.
