- South Medford's Maddy Warberg, shown making a pass earlier this season, scored 22 points in Saturday's win over Foothill of California.
A relatively quick turnaround did nothing to slow South Medford’s second-ranked girls basketball team Saturday, with the Panthers feasting on Foothill High of Palo Cedro, California, early on to set the stage for a 93-33 blowout in the Sabrina Ionescu Showcase.
South Medford built a 29-2 advantage in the opening quarter and created plenty of playing time among its roster in the tournament finale at De La Salle High School in Concord, California.
Senior guard Maddy Warberg gave her team a boost with 12 of her 22 points during a dominant first quarter for the Panthers (10-2), who played the tournament’s late game Friday at 8 p.m. but was back on the court at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
South Medford also got stellar play from reserve sophomore Payton Andersen, who was dialed in from deep early on. Andersen drilled three of her five 3-pointers and scored 11 of her career-high 19 points in the opening frame.
Mayen Akpan added 16 points and Jordan Barlow also tacked on a career-high with 15 points for the Panthers, who played their second straight game without starting forward Dyllyn Howell.
Malia Taulani added eight points and Citrine Imperial-Viray connected on two of South Medford’s 11 3-pointers overall.
The Panthers will next open Southwest Conference play this coming Friday at home against Sheldon.
Foothill dropped to 9-5 overall with the loss.
