A vote is planned at the end of January on a new and “historic first contract” for Pacific Northwest Hospital Medicine Association providers in the Providence Medford Medical Center Emergency Department.

The Oregon Nurses Association said in a release Friday night that “this agreement marks a significant milestone and serves as a testament to what can be accomplished when employers bargain in good faith and with a genuine commitment to their staff.”

Hundreds of ONA-represented nurses remain on strike at Providence Medford and seven other hospitals around the state. The strike began Jan. 10 and includes caregivers and doctors at women’s clinics in the Portland metro area.

In all, some 5,000 ONA-represented workers are on strike, the largest of its kind in Oregon history.

Providence officials said earlier this week that federally-led negotiating teams are in place around Oregon to continue bargaining sessions with ONA. The union, meanwhile, said it has heard little in the way of new contract proposals from Providence officials.

The new contract for the Providence ER providers includes a 20.7% base wage increase for physicians, significant pay increases for advanced practice registered nurses and physicians assistants, and enhanced shift differentials, along with additional benefits for continuing education and workplace safety, the ONA release said.

Providence Medford officials did not respond to a request for comment.

A vote on the tentative agreement is scheduled for the last week of January, ONA said.
