- Crater's Ryland Walters pinned Thurston's Aydan Beckstead in 1 minute, 15 seconds at 175 pounds during the championship dual at the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond.
Crater flexed its muscle on the mat yet again Saturday, going unbeaten in six boys wrestling duals to claim the Class 5A championship and highlight the local effort at the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond.
The class of the bunch came in the form of a collection of Comets that dominated the action, with Jeremiah Oliva, Joey Hutchins, Jaret Hickey, Aidan Godley, Kutter Christensen, Jaxson Godley and Ryland Walters each going undefeated to lead their team to the title.
Christensen was making his debut after returning from injury and was scattered in the lineup among the Godley brothers with wins at 157 and 165 pounds. Christensen and Jaxson Godley, also not far removed from his own return to the mat, traded roles at 157 and the latter also moved to 165 for a couple wins when both were in the lineup.
Oliva scored most of his wins at 126 but did land a fall at 132, while Hutchins (138), Hickey (144), Aidan Godley (150) and Walters (175) were mainstays to dominate their weight classes.
Crater clinched the top spot in its pool with convincing wins over Ridgeview (72-12), Silverton (69-12) and Mountain View (71-3) to open the two-day tournament Friday.
When the action turned to the championship bracket Friday, the Comets scored a 51-25 win over West Albany in the quarterfinals before taking down host Redmond, 62-16, in the semifinals.
An expected matchup with Midwestern League cohort Thurston played out like the two previous meetings with the 5A title contenders, with Crater shaking off an early surge by the Colts in the lightweights to win going away, 41-30. The Comets won eight matches in a row between 138 and 215 to separate for the victory.
Also advancing to the 5A championship bracket was Eagle Point, which placed first in its pool but had to settle for fourth place after falling 63-10 to Thurston in the semifinals and then 39-38 to Redmond in the third-place final.
The Eagles had previously beaten Redmond 42-29 in the final round of its unbeaten run through its pool, with other wins coming against McKay (46-33) and North Eugene (76-5).
Heavyweight Brian Cortez was the lone Eagle Point wrestler to go undefeated throughout the tournament, although 165-pounder Gavin Pogue wasn’t far off the pace. Pogue’s lone loss came when he moved up to 175 to challenge Bend standout Leif Larwin.
Also in the 5A competition, Phoenyx Pennell went 4-2 at 120 pounds to lead the cause for Ashland.
At the Class 6A level, South Medford suffered a pair of setbacks during Friday’s pool rounds to fall into the lower-tier Classic Cup bracket Saturday.
The Panthers opened with a 47-33 win over Oregon City but fell short against McMinnville (51-30) and Mountainside (48-32) to miss out on the championship bracket.
In the Classic Cup bracket, South Medford took down Aloha (51-27) in the quarterfinals and McNary (50-25) in the semifinals before coming up just short in the first-place dual with Sandy, 42-40.
Brody Foss (150), Bridger Foss (175), Corbyn Schumack (190), Keegan Thonstad (215) and Isa De La Torre (285) each were victorious every time they took to the mat for the runner-up Panthers. Vaughn Graff also won his only two contested matches at 113.
As part of the Oregon Wrestling Classic girls tournament, North Medford went 2-3 in pool duals to move into the Platinum Classic Cup, where the Black Tornado was swept in three matches to finish in eighth place.
Saturday’s action included setbacks to Tillamook (54-9), Hood River Valley (54-24) and Sprague (60-12), with forfeits hindering North Medford as much as anything.
North Medford standout Sadie Hall was on her way to a potential undefeated run through the tourney at 130 and 135 with three first-period pins before having to take an injury default in her fourth match. Hall did not return to action.
