South Medford junior Joey Clevenger drives to the hoop for a basket against Grants Pass Tuesday evening in Medford.

South Medford started slow but it was all about the Panthers’ finish Friday night as they erased an 11-point deficit in the final quarter to edge South Eugene, 48-47, for a Southwest Conference boys basketball road triumph.

Cole Adee, Quinton Ritchie and Joey Clevenger each scored five points in a 20-point fourth quarter surge that allowed South Medford (7-10, 3-2 SWC) to earn its third victory in the four outings — with only four points deciding the last three games.

Adee finished with 16 points, three steals and three rebounds as the only Panther to reach double figures, while Ritchie had eight points and three rebounds and Clevenger finished with six points, four rebounds, three blocks and three assists.

The fourth quarter was a far cry from the opening frame, when Jed Johnson knocked down a 3-pointer and tacked on a pair of free throws for South Medford’s lone points in falling behind 13-5 to the Axe (10-6, 2-2).

Johnson finished with six points to go with five rebounds, three steals and two assists. Jake VonStrahl also added five points — including a fourth-quarter 3-pointer — to go with six rebounds, two blocks and two assists.

Cameron Perry scored 15 points and Levi Hawes had 11 points for South Eugene, which went 2-for-6 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
