Musician Jon Galfano has played on just about every musical stage in the Rogue Valley, bringing his classic rock chops, virtuosity across multiple instruments and lovable stage presence to many listeners.

A proficient guitarist, singer and piano player, Galfano plays a range of genres and styles from Creedence Clearwater Revival to Billy Joel.

“There’s a certain buzz that you do get as a performer; that is that same buzz that I have to this day, and that’s why I’m still playing in my later years now at a high level,” Galfano said.

Subscribing to the motto of “Just do it until you can’t do it anymore,” the multi-instrumentalist has been playing for multiple decades.

“I don’t need to be in front of an audience to play and get that satisfaction,” Galfano said.

Galfano often performs solo, but after meeting singer-songwriter Jen Ambrose, the two have been performing together often as well to bring cover songs and Ambrose’s original tunes to stages across Southern Oregon.

“We just chemically came together musically and it was just like, wow,” he said of his peer. “Our vocals match up beautifully, and our harmonies are just really wonderful.”

While Galfano has been playing in the Rogue Valley now for more than two decades, the musician’s sonic journey began thousands of miles away growing up in southern Wisconsin.

At the age of seven, the family piano in Galfano’s childhood home sparked a love for music that was further strengthened by the debut of The Beatles on the “Ed Sullivan Show” in front of American audiences.

After watching the iconic British band’s live performance, “within the next week, we were taking guitar lessons … and that’s where my musical career began,” Galfano said of playing with childhood friends. “We were using beer cases for drums.”

The young band started off with gigs at high school dances, and after years of playing and improving his talents, Galfano got an invite to join up-and-coming band Freight.

Among the biggest bands in Wisconsin at the time, Freight opened for artists such as Styx and Foghat, playing in front of thousands of fans.

Galfano eventually needed a stable income and career, so he decided to switch from the musical stage to live television on air, utilizing his performing abilities and fascination with meteorology to work as the local weatherman for television stations across the United States.

In fact, Galfano’s role as a weatherman is what brought him to Southern Oregon after receiving a job offer in Medford in 1993.

“I was the former CBS weatherman at KTVL,” he said. “I just love it here; I’ve always loved the people here, and it’s a West Coast vibe.”

That love for the region extends into the local music scene, and Galfano decided to pick the guitar up and start performing again after his time as a TV weatherman.

“In the blossoming of venues to play here, it makes it a hotbed of really good music with a lot of really good players here, men and women all, and it’s fun that audiences get to see it,” he said. “It’s a good place to be to do music.”

Galfano also keeps busy with his YouTube channel, posting videos of live performances, music videos, original songs and other content.

“I’m still churning stuff out on YouTube, and I love it,” he said.
