South Medford, North Medford revel in Rogue X competition

- South Medford's Rachel Stillman swims to victory in the 200-yard individual medley at Rogue X in Medford Wednesday evening.
When South Medford and North Medford get together in competition, there’s always going to be that one-upmanship mentality, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of respect or appreciation for the other.
The swim teams from both schools put that on display Wednesday night during a dual meet at Rogue X in Medford, with the Panthers scoring a sweep on the scoreboard but also an enjoyable evening for all involved as the teams ramp up for the district championships.
South Medford’s boys team placed first in seven of the 12 events for a 108-74 victory, while the Black Tornado girls won nine of the 13 events but fell shy in the team score, 105-91.
“It was a great day, crosstown rivals but lots of fun,” said South Medford head coach Robyn Schiffer. “It was our senior day so we were able to celebrate together with both teams, so that was awesome.”
“It was just good, fun competition,” she added. “All of the races, the kids were there to win and score and beat the other team, but still do it with a smile and cheering for each other. That’s always fun because a lot of these kids have grown up together with club swimming and church and elementary school. It’s a fun meet, and it was a close one.”
South Medford seniors Devon Scott, Logan Casper and Joe Pastrano each set personal records to claim individual wins for the boys team and highlight their efforts.
Scott touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.09 seconds, ahead of teammate Kenton Fine (24.39), while Casper won the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 11.08 seconds and Pastrano set a huge PR in the 100 butterfly in 1:11.72.
“I was really proud of them because we had a lot of PRs,” said Schiffer, “so going into districts in two weeks it’s looking really positive for our kids.”
North Medford sophomore Eli Stebbins set the tone for his team with wins in the 100 free (51.85) and 200 free (2:01.30), with the Black Tornado also getting PRs in wins by Sam Wright in the 200 individual medley (2:42.45) and Sawyer Jimenez in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.62).
North Medford senior Erika George and sophomore Emma Sowles each recorded a pair of individual victories to lead the Black Tornado girls team, with George claiming the 50 free (27.11) and 100 back (1:10.64) and Sowles placing first in the 200 free (2:23.57) and 500 free (6:27.76).
Mila Lavelle and teammate Eva Ringger also had an exciting finish in the girls 100 breaststroke, with Lavelle getting the nod in 1:16.01 just barely ahead of Ringger (1:16.14).
South Medford junior Becca Krebs posted some big swims for the Panther girls, notably placing first in the 100 free (1:06.74) ahead of teammate Lily Williams (1:08.41).
Rachel Stillman, a junior, also saw a dip in her PR for the 200 I.M., winning the race in 2:45.07 over North Medford’s Isa Culver (2:48.27).
Both teams have high hopes for the upcoming district championships, although the Eugene-based schools will provide a stiff challenge, and Schiffer noted the presence of a facility like Rogue X hopefully will help trim that gap in future years for the Medford schools.
“Having Rogue X now, it’s such a beautiful facility, it’s a fast pool and people in the community are now really seeing what swimming is,” said the coach, “so I know in the next couple years we’re just going to probably be getting more club swimmers and kids that have taken swim lessons, and that will just help build the programs.”
