In a matchup of Class 6A and 5A wrestling programs that each carry high hopes toward the upcoming state championships, Eagle Point was able to edge out South Medford, 41-32, during Thursday night’s dual meet.
The relatively even matchup — each team posted four pins and one technical fall — came down to a six-point forfeit received by Eagle Point’s Ryan McFall at 113 pounds and a 2-1 edge in decisions for the Eagles.
Jaxon DeVette may have pulled off the biggest upset of the night for Eagle Point with an 8-4 decision over Vaughn Graff at 106 pounds, while Ethan Metcalf scored a 7-1 decision over Kaden Miller at 144.
South Medford’s Brody Foss earned his own marquee win with a 7-0 decision over Nathan Mallari at 150.
In the night’s most anticipated matchup at heavyweight between state placers Isa De La Torre of South Medford and Brian Cortez of Eagle Point, De La Torre was able to work toward a turn of his opponent in the first period and eventual pin in 1 minute, 29 seconds.
In the girls wrestling matchup, forfeits ruled the night as South Medford earned a 42-18 victory. Eagle Point’s Emma Lee (135) and Edna Montes (140), however, earned the lone contested victories in the dual.
One night prior, Eagle Point was able to generate a 63-15 boys wrestling victory over Ashland in a Midwestern League dual that also saw Ashland’s Sage Thatcher win by fall in 2:56 over Emily Fitzgerald in a prime girls wrestling matchup at 157 pounds.
