GIRLS HOOPS: North Medford bounces back with balanced effort in win

After stubbing its toe Tuesday in a narrow road loss, North Medford wasted little time in putting things away Friday night in a 57-27 girls basketball win over South Eugene.

The Black Tornado raced to a 21-4 lead in the opening eight minutes and scored their most resounding triumph of the season behind a balanced effort that saw 10 players register at least one basket in the Southwest Conference matchup.

Abigail Taylor and Caileigh Raines each paved the way for North Medford (7-13, 4-4 SWC) with nine points, while Madalin Miller was on their heels after scoring eight points. Raines also supplied three steals and two assists, and Kaylin Verduzco chipped in with seven rebounds and four steals.

The Black Tornado got seven points apiece from Sophia West and Olivia Boger, with West coming up with four steals and Boger adding three steals and three assists.

South Eugene (5-17, 0-9) was held to seven field goals and committed 32 turnovers to create a lopsided scoreboard, with the Axe posting 11 of their 27 points in the final quarter.

CRATER 68, THURSTON 25: At Central Point, Crater junior Taylor Young poured in 11 points in the first quarter and finished with 28 overall as the top-ranked Comets had little trouble remaining undefeated in Midwestern League play.

Young helped her cause with nine steals to go with six assists, while Sage Winslow collected 18 points, six steals and five assists for Crater (21-1, 9-0 MWL).

Lydia Traore finished with 12 points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks for the Comets, who opened a 23-0 lead through one quarter over Thurston (9-12, 4-5).

SPRINGFIELD 60, EAGLE POINT 43: At Eagle Point, Thianna Deng-Gomez scored 13 points and Kady Lindstrom added 10 points and six steals for Eagle Point in the Midwestern League loss.

Jill Garlitz provided nine points and six assists and Kady Ledbetter had eight rebounds and six points for the Eagles (11-8, 4-4 MWL), who fell victim to a hot night of shooting beyond the arc by Springfield.

Sailor Hall connected for four of her six 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help the Millers pull away. Hall finished with 21 points, and fifth-ranked Springfield drained 11 3-pointers overall.

CASCADE CHRISTIAN 52, BROOKINGS-HARBOR 29: At Brookings, Angelica Arce led three Cascade Christian players in double figures to help the fifth-ranked Challengers remain unbeaten in Southern Oregon Conference play.

Isabel McCauley added 12 points, six steals, five rebounds and two blocks and Jordynn Jones had 12 points, five steals, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks for Cascade Christian (18-4, 8-0 SOC).

Grace McCauley chimed in with 10 rebounds and five assists and Emma Coats added eight points for the Challengers.
