Crater hasn’t enjoyed the type of boys basketball season it was expecting when the season tipped off this past December, but that didn’t deter the Comets from making sure they made a big splash in their home finale Tuesday night.

With junior guard Julien Grant spurring Crater along, the Comets were able to seize control in the third quarter against Eagle Point and keep their Midwestern League rivals at an arm’s distance thereafter for a 72-59 victory in Central Point.

Grant knocked down six 3-pointers en route to a career-high 39 points to go with six rebounds for Crater (10-12, 4-6 MWL), which snapped a three-game losing streak in a season beset by illness and injuries.

It was the Comets’ eighth straight win over Eagle Point (8-14, 3-6).

Grant scored 16 points in the second quarter alone after dropping in four shots beyond the arc, then had nine points in each of the third and fourth quarters to stave off a comeback bid by the Eagles.

Elijah Bryant added 16 points after going 8-for-10 from the free-throw line to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals for Crater, while David Rodriguez had three rebounds and two steals and the Comets got five rebounds apiece from Ben Higginson and Jakobi Cole.
