Rogue Rapids swimmer James Geraghty of Medford won the high point award and took first place in five individual events among 13-year-old boys at the 2025 Oregon Swimming Arena Short Course Age 11-14 Swimming Championships recently in Beaverton.
In a grueling weekend where he raced a total of 4,150 yards, Geraghty took gold in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17 minutes, 20.63 seconds to finish more than 13 seconds ahead of the second-place competitor; the 1,000 free (10:32.54); the 200 free (1:50.78); the 200 backstroke (1:59.65), with a margin of over six seconds from the nearest competitor; and a three-second win in the 100 backstroke (56.59).
Geraghty also took third in the 500 free (5:04.19), and his five golds and one bronze medal earned him the state championship meet high point award among 13-year-old boys with 63 points scored.
Geraghty participated in his maximum of six events, but his 50-yard backstroke split (touching with his feet during a backstroke turn) in the first half of his 100-yard backstroke (27.69) would have won the state championships’ inaugural 50 backstroke event for 13-year-old boys, which had only seven total participants.
Geraghty’s personal best time in preliminaries in the 200 backstroke (1:58.52) ranks him 22nd in the nation among 13-year-old boys.
Fellow Rogue Rapids swimmers Brienne Chamberland, 13, and Naiya DeSilva, 12, also were among top-10 swimmers that advanced to finals in each of their six respective events at the state meet.
Chamberland took second in the 50 breaststroke (31.58), third in the 50 free (25.41) and 200 breaststroke (2:30.06), and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.86) and 200 free (2:03.56). She also finished sixth in the 100 free (56.92).
In her first-ever short course state championship meet, newcomer DeSilva took third in the 50 butterfly (28.55), fourth in the 200 free (2:07.48), sixth in the 500 freestyle (5:42.46), and 10th in the 50 backstroke (32.02) and 100 free (59.05).
DeSilva advanced to finals as the second seed In the 100 fly with a time of 1:04.19, but was disqualified in finals due to a false start.
Also competing for the Rapids were Maanya Mittal, 12, who finished 11th in the 50 breaststroke (37.49) and 12th in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.24).
At the 2025 Oregon State 10U Short Course Championships in Springfield, 9-year-old Chuma Chiedozi led the Rogue Rapids with a first-place finish and a 10-and-under age group regionals qualifying time in the boys 50 free (30.75).
Chiedozi also placed eighth in the 100 free (1:17.56) and 50 breaststroke (47.55).
Fern Bergland, 7, of the Rapids placed in the top five in all of her events in the 8-and-under girls category. She took second in the 50 breaststroke (48.26) and 50 fly (42.04), third in the 50 free (37.99) and 25 fly (18.63), fourth in the 100 free (1:23.89) and fifth in the 100 individual medley (1:35.25).
Roland Suida, 7, took third place for the Rapids in the 8U boys 25 backstroke (19.70) and 50 backstroke (43.22), and Berkli Allphin, 7, was third in the 25 backstroke (20.21) for 8U girls.
The Rogue Rapids’ 8U girls relay with Berkli Allphin, Indy Manning, Bergland and Andi Allphin finished fourth in the 100 medley relay (1:33.64).
Chamberland, Chiedozi, DeSilva and Geraghty qualified and will compete at the Northwest Age Group Regionals Championship in Boise, Idaho, on March 20-23. Rogue Rapids’ senior swimmers Erika George, Alex Titianu and Eleanor Geraghty will next compete in the Speedo Senior Sectionals next weekend in Boise, Idaho.
