Medford police say a suspect on transitional leave from prison was arrested late Thursday night after attempting to elude officers in his vehicle and then crashing in east Medford.

Around midnight, a Medford police officer observed a vehicle traveling in the continuous left-turn lane on Crater Lake Avenue, according to a news release. The driver stopped at a green light and failed to maintain their lane, MPD said.

“The officer initiated a traffic stop at Crater Lake Avenue and Grand Avenue and contacted the visibly intoxicated driver. As the officer spoke with him, the suspect suddenly fled. Officers pursued the vehicle eastbound on East McAndrews Road to northbound Brookdale Avenue,” according to the release.

Police said the driver ran a stop sign at Lone Pine Road and struck landscaping boulders, causing the vehicle to flip and land upside down in a yard.

“The suspect attempted to flee on foot but was quickly detained while crawling out of the wreckage. He sustained only minor injuries, and no other occupants were in the vehicle,” the release said.

Police say the driver was transported to Providence Hospital for a court-ordered blood draw and medical clearance before being lodged in the Jackson County Jail on multiple charges. Four hours after the initial stop, he provided a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .14%, according to the release.

The suspect was not named, and no further information is available at this time, police said.
