LETTER TO THE EDITOR: We are living with climate change in the Rogue Valley

Published 12:28 pm Saturday, March 22, 2025

Most Southern Oregonians understand that global warming is caused by our releasing greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, but many don’t understand how the process works.

Similarly, most of us realize that global warming and its climate change consequences are impacting those of us living on the frontlines through reducing snowpack, increased drought risk, rising sea level and enhanced wildfire risk. But again, many of us don’t fully understand the connections.

For several years, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now has been offering the community a 10-week course entitled Master Climate Protector that was designed to provide interested Southern Oregonians with an opportunity to understand these connections and explore what other ways global warming and climate change are affecting.

The course also considers what we can do to address the problem and addresses these issues in a manner suitable for non-scientists.  This course has now been converted into an Southern Oregon University course entitled “Living with Climate Change: Rogue Valley,” where SOU students can earn three credits for satisfactorily completing the course. However, the course remains available to community members and thus provides a novel environment where SOU students and community members can discuss issues of mutual concern.

The next offering of the course starts on the evening of Wednesday April 2, in the SOU Science Building running from 5:30 – 8:20 pm, repeating for 10 weeks. Those interested in registering for the course should visit hhttps://socan.eco.lwcc for details. Early registration is advised since the number of seats available is limited.
