OUTDOOR ADVENTURES: Creek clean-up, trout stocking, film festival and more

Join the Bear Creek Stewards and Stream Smart to help clean up and pull weeds along the Bear Creek Greenway during the annual Bear Creek Stewardship Day, set for 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at one of nine locations between Central Point and Ashland. Register by visiting bit.ly/4jceAku.

Trout stocking underway at lakes, ponds

Howard Prairie Lake is scheduled to be stocked with 7,500 trout this week by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, which stocks millions of trout in lakes and ponds across the state each year.

Other locations to be stocked this week include 2,000 trout in Galesville Reservoir near Glendale and Medco Pond near Butte Falls, plus 300 in the pond at Reinhart Volunteer Park in Grants Pass.

Tree walk set for Grants Pass

The city of Grants Pass is hosting a tree walk starting at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lawnridge Park, 1090 Hawthorne Avenue in Grants Pass. The walk should take about 60-90 minutes.

Film Festival comes to Grants Pass

The 2025 Wild & Scenic Film Festival hosted by the Klamath-Siskiyou Wildlands Center is set for Saturday at the Grants Pass Performing Arts Center. Film topics include water, climate, salmon and wildlife.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for drinks, food and raffle and films start at 6 p.m. Regular admission is $20.

Parking is available off of Northeast Olive Street, with other parking on the north and east sides of Grants Pass High School.

Celebrate Earth Day at Central Point farm, park

Central Point’s parks and recreation department is hosting its third annual Earth Day celebration from 4-6 p.m. on April 22 at Bohnert Family Farm Park, 659 Buck Point St. in Central Point.

Planned activities include crafts and giveaways, including donated plants and library books on gardening and children’s topics, while supplies last. Treats will be available for purchase.

Medford publishes summer activity guide

Medford’s parks and recreation department is publishing a Summer 2025 activities guide that includes events, classes and other activities. It’s due to be available online as of Thursday, at playmedford.com.

Land Conservancy hosts spring outings

Visit natural areas this spring with the Southern Oregon Land Conservancy, which has set a series of educational hikes, including those to Pompadour Bluff near Ashland, the Rogue River Preserve near Eagle Point and the Rough and Ready Creek Preserve near Cave Junction.

Learn about butterflies, wildflowers and more from expert outdoor educators.

The hikes include the following:

  • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 19, visit the Rogue River Preserve near Eagle Point during Open Lands Day.
  • 3-5 p.m. April 30, explore Pompadour Bluff with Mergenthaler.
  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 3, visit Rough and Ready Creek Preserve near Cave Junction with hydrology experts Gordon Lyford and Randy Frick.
  • 9 a.m. to noon May 4, explore the natural history of the Jacksonville Woodlands with Myco Schroeder, education and engagement specialist.
  • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 7, sketch and paint with Sarah F. Burns at Pompadour Bluff.

Mountain Club hosts trail work parties

The Siskiyou Mountain Club is hosting two work parties this month, along the Illinois River and Babyfoot Lake:

  • Join a work party along the Illinois River National Recreation Trail Friday through Sunday near Agness. Recent backpacking experience is required.
  • Join a work party to help maintain the trail to Babyfoot Lake in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness west of Selma, from 7 a.m. April 26 to 6 p.m. April 27. No experience is necessary.
