Over the past few years, I have received several emails from our Representative Cliff Bentz proclaiming his support for the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America. This Second Amendment guarantees the right of the people “to keep and bear arms.” Bentz repeatedly says his obedience to our Constitution is the reason he supports the proliferation of guns in America. Bentz has then taken actions aligning with his view, specifically votes in Congress, to oppose gun regulation.

Where is Congressman Cliff Bentz’ support for the First Amendment? This amendment guarantees our right to free speech. It means we are legally bound to support people in expressing opinions that differ from our own. In 2025 this right is threatened daily by the current federal administration’s demands for loyalty to Donald Trump’s views, its financial restraints on our world-renowned universities and by its illegal targeting of law-abiding citizens, students and immigrants who voice a variety of opinions.

Why isn’t our elected Congressman Cliff Bentz sending out emails proclaiming his support for the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America? What happened to his obedience to our Constitution? And most important for an elected official: what action is he taking to stand up to the current administration and insure his constituents’ First Amendment rights are protected?

I hope Rogue Valley Times reporters are asking Bentz to go on-the-record about his actions to preserve our fundamental First Amendment rights.
