No one is ever truly prepared when tragedy strikes. It arrives unannounced, unimaginable and leaves a silence that words struggle to fill.
What happened to the Umpqua Community College softball team is heartbreaking beyond measure — a devastating loss that has shaken our entire community. A coach and a student-athlete died in a vehicle accident Friday night.
At approximately 4 p.m. Saturday, the Oregon State Police released the names of the deceased as UCC head softball coach Jami Lea Strinz, 46, of Roseburg and UCC student-athlete Kiley Nevaeh Jones, 19, of Nampa, Idaho.
Shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, while returning from a doubleheader at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, the team’s Chevrolet Express bus was involved in a crash that sent eight passengers to area hospitals with moderate to serious injuries.
“These individuals were cherished members of our campus — an exceptional student-athlete, and a passionate and talented coach. Our entire community is grieving this tragic loss, and our heartfelt condolences are with their families, teammates, and loved ones,” said UCC President Rachel Pokrandt.
In moments like these, life shifts into painful clarity. Wins and losses no longer matter. The games, the scores, the rivalries — all fade away in the face of grief. What rises instead is a community that will flock to those affected with love and compassion.
Our thoughts are with the families, friends and teammates left behind to navigate a world forever changed. We stand with them, not just as fans or fellow students, but as the community of Douglas County.
To those we lost — we remember you not only for your talent and dedication on the field, but for the spirit, joy and light you brought into the lives of everyone around you.
