One of Oregon’s best-ever distance runners, Crater senior Tayvon Kitchen announced on Monday morning that he is committed to BYU.

Kitchen made the announcement on his social media.

Kitchen is a two-time Class 5A state champion in cross country, winning in 2023 and 2024. He also owns the state record for a 5K cross country race at 14 minutes, 23.7 seconds.

He has been a big part of the Comets winning four straight Class 5A team championships in cross country as well.

Kitchen and fellow Crater senior Josiah Tostenson have been one of the best distance running duos in the country for the past couple of years.

At New Balance Nationals last summer, the Crater team of Kitchen, Nicholas Kube, Caleb Doddington and Tostenson finished the 4,000-meter distance medley relay in a national record time of 9:44.30.

Tostenson is the state record holder in the 1,500 with a finish of 3:40.06 and Kitchen is No. 2 with 3:41.62.

Both Tostenson and Kitchen finished with sib-four minute miles in the 2024-25 indoor track season. Tostenson ran 3:57.47 and Kitchen ran 3:59.61.

Tostenson has been committed to Washington since September.
