The Oregonian/OregonLive has updated its searchable database of beneficiaries of the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System, adding 5,947 beneficiaries who retired last year and another 118 who retired Jan. 1, 2025.

The database is now available to all readers. (Click here to go to the database).

The newsroom has maintained the database since 2011, when the pension system reached a settlement with The Oregonian/OregonLive and the Salem Statesman Journal to release the names and monthly benefits of what were then 110,000 beneficiaries.

The database now includes the names of 147,958 individuals receiving retirement benefits. The data includes each beneficiary’s length of service; the retirement formula their benefit calculation was based on; the monthly and annual equivalent benefit; and how that compares to their final salary. It does not include beneficiaries who received lump sum payments or spouses or other relatives of public employees who are receiving a survivor benefit.

Earlier this month, the newsroom analyzed the newest class of beneficiaries, finding that some retirees are still scoring huge pensions thanks to a costly retirement formula that’s been minting millionaires for decades. Although lawmakers made reforms, government employees who started working before 1996 are generally eligible for a favorable calculation that has been a primary driver of PERS’ massive pension deficit, which now stands at $30 billion.

Pensions for beneficiaries who retired in 2024 ranged from about $1,000 annually to nearly $330,000, with a median of $23,297, according to a newsroom analysis. The median benefit for 2024 retirees with 30 or more years, which PERS defines as a career employee, was $57,832 annually.

The median benefit for all beneficiaries in the updated database is $29,473 annually, the newsroom found.
