While he didn’t quite get the sub-four-minute mile he was looking for, Crater senior Josiah Tostenson passed an Oregon legend on Friday at the Nike/Jesuit Twilight Relays.

Tostenson finished the mile at Jesuit High School in 4 minutes, 0.69 seconds.

The time puts him at No. 2 in Oregon high school history in the mile, passing Galen Rupp of Central Catholic, who ran 4:01.80 in 2004.

Getting past Rupp’s mark means that Tostenson was passing someone he idolized growing up.

“Galen’s a huge icon, not to just running in general, but to the state and its history,” Tostenson said. “I always looked up to Galen growing up. I had photos with him when I was 10.”

The state record in the mile is 3:59.38, turned in by Summit’s Matthew Maton in 2014.

It wasn’t all smiles for Tostenson, who was aiming for a sub-four-minute mile at the Twilight Relays. The race included multiple pacers to help him reach the mark.

Prepping for the event, Tostenson was supposed to be one of multiple runners trying to get below four minutes. But in the week leading up to the Twilight Relays, multiple runners dropped out.

That meant that Tostenson was by himself in the final stretch chasing a record time.

“I didn’t feel too sharp today, but still happy with the performance,” Tostenson said. “Just got to get back to the drawing board.”

But Tostenson said it wasn’t an excuse, because he feels like he should be able to run fast enough without the help.

“I still disappointed because I think I should be able to sub-four from the gun,” he said.

Tostenson is the reigning Class 5A state champion in the 1,500 and the 3,000 meters. The Washington commit is also a member of Crater’s cross country team that won four straight state titles.

He also holds the state record in the 1,500 (3:40.06).
