Children’s Museum: The Children’s Museum of Southern Oregon, 413 W. Main St., Medford, features early learning opportunities, educational experiences, interactive play exhibits and activities for children. Exhibits at the hands-on museum include farm-to-table play area, ranger station, wildlife rescue tree-house, a replica of Bigfoot, “The Makery,” art projects and more. Bird Walk: Jim Hostick, of the Rogue Valley Audubon Society, leads slow-paced, 1½-mile walks at 8:30 a.m. the first Wednesday of every month at Denman Wildlife Area, off Touvelle or Agate roads, in Eagle Point. The numbers of different species observed by participants are entered in the Cornell Ornithological Laboratory’s eBird database. ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum: A variety of interactive science exhibits and programs are available at the museum, located at 1500 E. Main St., Ashland. Banned Book Club: Adults can meet to read and discuss banned books at 4 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month at the Medford library, 205 S. Central Ave. Talk will focus on what caused selected books to be banned, what being banned means, how this impacts us as a society, and if we agree or disagree. ‘Buckets for Breakthrough’: The Children’s Museum of Southern Oregon will host “Buckets for Breakthrough,” a community event to raise critical funds for a young boy in our community living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at the Children’s Museum of Southern Oregon, 413 W. Main St., Medford. The event will feature Water Bucket Challenges, where community volunteers will bravely stand to be soaked for a good cause and live music by local musicians Paul Correa and Connor Reese. Tacos will be available for purchase. Admission is $10, $40 per family. Buckets can be purchased at the event or in advance, with all proceeds going directly to support William’s journey. Local History Presentation: Diana Coogle, author and journalist for Jefferson Public Radio, will present “How Hippies Changed the Way We Eat,” at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 8, at the Eagle Point library, 239 W. Main St., Eagle Point. In a time when America was in love with TV dinners and all things out of a can, Coogle grew her own food, bartered for what she couldn’t grow, and cooked communally. She will discuss the impact of communes and the hippies who lived communally, and the homegrown diets and practices of some of Oregon’s best known intentional communities. Rogue Valley Bird Day: Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day at the Rogue Valley Bird Day event from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 10, at North Mountain Park, 620 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland. This year’s theme “Shared Spaces: Creating Bird-Friendly Cities and Communities,” highlights the importance of small changes — things we can do every day to support bird populations in our own backyards. Activities will include games and crafts for kids, a bird-calling exhibition, contests, prizes and more. Bird Day will include educational exhibits from the Klamath Bird Observatory, Wild Birds Unlimited, Pollinator Project Rogue Valley and others. Sanctuary One Tours: Sanctuary One, a nonprofit animal rescue care farm, will offer tours at 10:30 a.m. every Friday and Saturday through Oct. 18, at 13195 Upper Applegate Road, Jacksonville. A staff member or volunteer will guide you around the farm, explain how a care farm works and answer questions. The tour also includes a chance to meet the sanctuary’s herd of rescued farm animals and house pets. Tours last 90 minutes and involve walking about 3/4 mile. Feline Fair: Friends of the Animals will host a “Feline Fair,” a cat and kitten adoption event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the second Saturday of every month, at the Rogue Valley Mall,1600 N. Riverside Ave., Medford. The event will be held inside, across from Kay Jewelers on the lower level of the mall. FOTAS will be joined by Melly Cats Rescue and Rogue Community Cat Rescue and have nearly 50 foster cats and kittens available for adoption. Siskiyou Singers: The choir, directed by Mark Reppert, will present “Earth Song,” featuring music celebrating nature and admonitions to protect it at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 10-11, in the Music Recital Hall, 405 S. Mountain Ave., at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. The program includes “Kasar Mie la Gaji (The Earth is Tired)” by Alberto Grau; “Break, Break, Break,” a Tennyson poem about lost love, set to music by choir Director Mark Reppert; “O Lovely Night” by Johannes Brahms; “Sweet Suffolk Owl” by Thomas Vautor;  Eric Whitacre’s “Little Birds”; a Mark Hayes arrangement of “Home on the Range”; Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi”; and the concert namesake piece, “Earth Song” by Frank Ticheli.
