Top-six showings for Wheelock, Heim propel Crusaders to 4A/3A/2A/1A girls golf state trophy

St. Mary’s sophomore Emma Wheelock gave it a run but came up short in a bid to pad the Crusaders’ rich history of girls golf state champions at the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A level Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.

Wheelock closed strong with a 6-over-par 77, but catching up to Catlin Gabel’s Vishaka Priyan proved insurmountable for the St. Mary’s standout — and the rest of the field — after Priyan carded an impressive two-day total of 6-under 136.

Priyan was the state runner-up a year ago.

With Wheelock leading the charge behind a fourth-place tie overall, and freshman Olivia Heim tying for sixth overall, St. Mary’s was able to secure a second-place state trophy in the team competition behind only Salem Academy.

St. Mary’s combined for a 684 team score, and Salem Academy collected a 654 to earn its second straight girls golf team title.

Wheelock carded two birdies in each round, finishing with a 158 total to tie Jade Janecek of Banks and trail only Priyan (136), Chloe Johnston (147) and Ellie Gladow (156) of Salem Academy.

Wheelock, who also excels at soccer and basketball, tied for 11th last season in the state championships.

The St. Mary’s boys golf team placed seventh in the 3A/2A/1A state championships — with senior Davis Jones and freshman Ronan Wilkerson each among the top-10 individuals — to wrap up a good run for the Medford school in Corvallis.

Jones, who tied for 12th last year, finished ninth Tuesday with rounds of 76 and 73 for a 149 total, while Wilkerson was only one shot off that pace in 10th at 150 (77-73).

At the Class 6A level, South Medford was unable to solve the riddle that was the OGA Golf Course in Woodburn, placing 13th out of 14 teams in the boys golf state championships. The Panthers posted only one round below 80, and that was a second-round 79 from freshman Hudson Hackwell, who split duties with first-round scorer Braeden Carson (86).

South Medford junior Jed Johnson, who tied for 18th last year, was 64th overall this time around with a two-day 168, while senior Bodhi Hochendoner paced the Panthers (54th, 165) and sophomore Kyle Snowden was 61st (167).

North Medford sophomore Dallas Boekenoogen competed as an individual and finished in a tie for 76th at 176.

With a pair of 10th-place marks from Carson Krauss and Brevik Hill, who each posted 149 totals, Grants Pass finished seventh in the team competition.

Lake Oswego won the 6A boys and girls team titles, with Jaylee Hix of Grants Pass tying for 17th (164) to help the Cavers place ninth.

In 5A action, Crater sophomore Halle Shore tied for 15th overall (189) to help the Comets secure a sixth-place finish in the girls team competition, while Eagle Point’s Rylee Bodenbender rose to 20th (192) to help her team finish seventh overall at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell.

North Eugene senior Francesca Tomp became only the second four-time girls golf state champion with her run at the 5A championships, posting rounds of 77 and 72 to edge Wilsonville’s Evie Dunn by three strokes.

Crater senior Patrick Oropallo finished 33rd at 170 in the 5A boys golf state championships, with junior teammate Ryan Fowler two slots back in 35th (171) as the Comets finished eighth in the team standings.

Senior Treyson Putnam tied for 29th (167), junior Cole Allen tied for 38th (172) and Gary Leonardo was 46th (179) as individuals competing for Eagle Point in Woodburn.
